1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsItch.io’s July 2025 adult-content crackdown did not begin as a publicly announced blanket ban on adult games. The platform first removed adult NSFW projects from its browse and search systems, saying payment processors had scrutinized material hosted on the site and that it needed to protect the payment infrastructure on which creators and the platform depend.
That distinction matters. Many projects were made undiscoverable rather than immediately deleted: their pages could remain available through direct links, and existing buyers were generally told they would retain library access. At the same time, some pages were permanently removed, payments for 18-plus content were suspended through Stripe, and creators faced an uncertain audit whose effects reached games, comics, books, and other projects involving sex, queer identity, or mature themes.
What happened on July 24, 2025
On July 24, itch.io announced that it had “deindexed” all adult NSFW content from its browse and search pages. The company apologized for the sudden disruption and said affected pages would remain deindexed while it carried out a comprehensive audit.
In practical terms, deindexing removed projects from the storefront’s ordinary discovery routes. A visitor searching for a title or browsing an adult category might no longer find it, even if the project page and files were still hosted. The platform said that some pages could remain accessible through direct links and that customers who had already purchased affected products should retain access through their libraries, provided the creator had not removed the page or files.

That is different from permanent deletion. “Removed” is accurate for projects that were deleted or had their files withdrawn. For the larger group that remained hosted but disappeared from catalog navigation, “deindexed,” “hidden from search,” or “made undiscoverable” is more precise.
The action was nevertheless sweeping. Contemporary industry reporting estimated that more than 20,000 games disappeared from itch.io’s NSFW category. That figure was a reported estimate, not a definitive total published by itch.io, and the affected material extended beyond games to comics, books, and other creator projects.
The chronology behind the crackdown

| July 30, 2025 | The platform said it was contacting alternative payment processors more willing to support adult content. The status of Stripe and PayPal remained unsettled. |
| July 31, 2025 | Itch.io began reindexing free adult NSFW content, while paid adult content remained subject to further discussions and a slower possible reintroduction. |
Why No Mercy became part of the story
Itch.io linked the immediate pressure to No Mercy. The title had been temporarily available on the platform before being banned in April 2025. According to itch.io’s account, Collective Shout subsequently directed concerns about material on Steam and itch.io to payment processors.
The chronology is important, but it should not be simplified into a claim that Collective Shout directly ordered itch.io to remove every adult title. Collective Shout’s documented action was to pressure payment gateways and card companies. Itch.io made the platform decision and described the threat in terms of payment compliance and the protection of its infrastructure.

Collective Shout describes itself as an Australian advocacy organization focused on sexual exploitation. In its July 14 media release, it said it and allied organizations had asked seven payment and card companies to stop processing transactions for games featuring rape, incest, and child-abuse themes. It also referred to its earlier campaign against No Mercy and asked payment gateways to stop processing transactions for Steam, itch.io, and other platforms hosting similar games.
Those demands targeted payment intermediaries rather than simply asking itch.io to remove particular titles. That difference became central to the wider dispute: even when a payment company does not publicly announce a platform-wide ban, the possibility of losing payment support can pressure a platform to act broadly and quickly.
Why itch.io chose a broad review
Itch.io’s explanation rested partly on the way its storefront operates. The platform presents itself as an open, user-generated-content service with relatively low barriers to publication. It said it had more than two million product pages and could not rely on creator-supplied tags being accurate enough to identify only a narrow group of potentially problematic projects.

On a tightly controlled storefront, a payment or content review might be organized around a comparatively limited catalog and a defined set of editorial classifications. Itch.io argued that its open catalog made that approach unreliable. Rather than trust tags to isolate a few titles, it launched a wider review of adult-tagged and otherwise NSFW-associated pages.

Games that did not depict illegal conduct or explicit sex could still lose their usual route to an audience because they were associated with adult themes, sexuality, queer identity, or other mature subjects. Reporting on the response recorded particular concern among marginalized developers, who feared that financial compliance systems could become an imprecise cultural filter.
That concern is a documented reaction from creators and communities, not a finding that every affected title was improperly removed. The evidence does, however, show why the action provoked criticism beyond the creators of overtly explicit games: a system designed to manage payment risk can affect lawful fictional works according to broad categories rather than a close reading of each project.
The payment-processor layer
Itch.io said it had to respond urgently because payment processing is essential to the platform’s ability to operate and pay creators. The company acknowledged that advance notice was not realistically possible while the situation was developing.
Its creator FAQ says itch.io relies on Stripe and PayPal for transactions and that creators who collect money must comply with the acceptable-use policies of the payment processors connected to their accounts. The FAQ lists prohibited or unsupported themes including non-consensual content, underage or “barely legal” themes, incest or pseudo-incest, bestiality or animal-related content, rape or coercion, sex-trafficking implications, voyeurism, and certain extreme bodily-waste or harm fetishes.
The same FAQ says fictional, illustrated, and rendered adult content is generally allowed when it is legal. It also says sexualized images or videos of real people, the glorification of sexual violence, and sexual depictions of minors or minor-presenting characters are prohibited. These are itch.io’s stated platform rules; they are not an independent legal determination about any particular game.
The public record about the processors themselves is less straightforward. Itch.io’s account, reported by WIRED, said Stripe was unwilling to support adult content “designed for sexual gratification.” Mastercard told WIRED that it had not evaluated individual games or required restrictions on gaming platforms, while also describing requirements for controls against unlawful adult content.

- 【7-Point Precision Support – Total Body Relief】Extended sitting takes a toll on more than just your back. JECQCUPG engineered a complete 7-point support system that addresses seven critical zones: head, neck, shoulders, back, lumbar, hips, and legs. Each zone receives targeted pressure distribution to encourage proper spinal alignment and steady blood flow. The headrest and lumbar cushion adjust independently to fit heights from 120cm to 190cm. Whether you're locked into a gaming session or grinding through work hours, this system keeps fatigue at bay so you stay sharp and comfortable.
- 【51cm Wingless Seat – Sit Any Way You Like】Narrow seats with bulky side bolsters force your legs into unnatural positions. JECQCUPG removes those barriers with a flat, wingless cushion that spans a full 51cm – a full 13cm wider than the typical 38cm effective seat width found on standard chairs. The generous surface invites you to sit cross-legged, sideways, or however feels natural. High-density, high-rebound foam filling resists flattening, so your hips and thighs enjoy consistent cushioning without annoying pressure points. Comfort that adapts to you, not the other way around.
- 【Sofa-Grade Cushioning – Foam Meets Pocket Springs】Most gaming chairs rely on a single layer of foam that breaks down within months. JECQCUPG takes a smarter approach: dual-layer high-density foam paired with durable pocket springs – a construction borrowed from premium sofas. This combination delivers a plush yet supportive feel that cradles your body while preventing bottoming-out. The breathable PU leather cover resists scratches, wipes clean in seconds, and holds its shape through years of daily use. It's the kind of comfort that makes you forget you're sitting in an office chair.
- 【Synchronized Armrests + 3 Recline Angles】Three optimized angles – 90° for focused work, 110° for casual browsing, and 135° for full relaxation – give you the flexibility to switch postures throughout the day. But JECQCUPG goes further: the armrests are synchronized to tilt automatically with the backrest. Your arms stay supported at every recline angle, preventing shoulder strain and awkward positioning. The seat height adjusts up to 10cm, accommodating everyone from teenagers to tall adults. One chair, three modes, endless comfort.
- 【Steel-Reinforced Build – 150kg Capacity, Easy Assembly】Flimsy frames lead to squeaks, wobbles, and premature failure. JECQCUPG is built around a one-piece steel frame and a reinforced 5-star base – with steel thickness 3mm greater than most competing models. Tested to support 150kg, it offers a stable, secure sit for users ranging from 120cm to 185cm. Smooth-gliding, floor-friendly casters roll silently across any surface. Assembly is quick and frustration-free thanks to clear illustrated instructions and a complete tool set. Backed by responsive customer support – we've got you covered from unboxing to everyday use.
Those statements do not establish that Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, or PayPal issued one uniform public directive requiring itch.io to remove every NSFW title. The defensible conclusion is narrower: itch.io reported scrutiny and payment-infrastructure risk; advocacy groups pressured payment gateways; and payment companies described compliance frameworks that could affect what platforms were willing or able to sell.
Itch.io said Stripe payments for 18-plus content were suspended for the foreseeable future. It also said it was seeking alternative processors more willing to support adult content. That meant the dispute was not only about whether a title could remain on a website. It was also about whether creators could charge for it, receive their money, and continue using the storefront as a business.

- Loss of discovery: Projects could remain online while disappearing from search and browse pages, making it much harder for new audiences to find them.
- Payment uncertainty: Paid adult projects could lose their normal payment route while itch.io negotiated with processors.
- Audit risk: Pages could receive a content notice, remain deindexed, or be permanently removed depending on the review and the platform’s decisions.
- Potential payout problems: Itch.io’s FAQ says policy violations can lead to permanent administrative action without appeal and that funds in violating accounts may not be eligible for payout.
- Classification anxiety: Creators working with sexuality, gender, queer identity, or mature themes could be affected even when their work did not fit the most extreme categories described in the processor rules.
The difference between a free project and a paid one became especially significant after the partial restoration at the end of July. Free adult content could begin returning to public indexing, but paid adult content still depended on unresolved payment arrangements.
What the change meant for buyers
For buyers, the immediate problem was discoverability. A title could become difficult or impossible to locate through itch.io’s storefront even when a direct page remained available. Someone who already owned a product generally had a stated path through the itch.io library.
That access was not an absolute guarantee. It depended on the creator retaining the project page and files. If the creator removed the page or withdrew the files, the platform’s assurance about library access could no longer provide the same protection.
The practical experience therefore varied by title:
- A project might remain hosted but disappear from search and browse.
- A direct link might still lead to a page that could not be found through normal catalog navigation.
- A previously purchased product might remain available in a buyer’s library.
- A creator might remove the page or files, ending that route to access.
- A page could be permanently removed as part of an individual decision.
Without independent testing of the catalog, payment flows, or library behavior, it is more accurate to describe these as the platform’s stated pathways and reported consequences than as a universal account of what every user saw.

Free adult content partially returns
On July 31, itch.io said it had begun reindexing free adult NSFW content. The restoration was conditional: a qualifying project had to have payments disabled.
The platform warned that creators should be careful when changing pricing settings. If a project used individually priced files, disabling payments could make those files freely available. That created a significant trade-off for creators who wanted their pages visible again but did not want to give away material that had previously been sold.
Itch.io also announced a planned content-warning system for NSFW pages. The stated goal was to improve classification and age-related controls as the platform moved away from the initial blanket deindexing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This was not a complete reversal. Itch.io said it was still discussing payment support and would reintroduce paid content slowly. Later community-support material continued to direct creators toward the free-content reindexing process and its requirement that pages be marked as having no payments. The available record does not establish that paid adult games were restored wholesale.
Was this censorship?
“Censorship” is a characterization used by critics and affected creators, but it is not an uncontested description of the platform’s legal position. Itch.io framed the action as a payment-compliance and infrastructure-protection measure, not as a general judgment that all adult games were illegal or unacceptable.
At the same time, calling the response merely a technical safety measure would leave out its real cultural and economic effects. Search visibility is part of distribution. Payment access is part of publication. When lawful fictional works disappear from discovery systems or cannot be sold, the distinction between a storefront rule and a form of censorship becomes a substantive subject of debate rather than a question that can be settled by terminology alone.
The strongest factual description is therefore the most specific one: itch.io conducted a broad adult-content deindexing after reporting scrutiny connected to payment processors, temporarily removed many projects from ordinary discovery, suspended Stripe payments for 18-plus content, and later restored some free adult content under new conditions.

What remains unknown
The reviewed public statements do not provide a definitive platform-wide count separating titles that were permanently deleted from those that were merely deindexed. Nor do they establish a complete list of paid adult titles restored after July 2025.
It is also not supported by the available evidence to say that every affected title was permanently deleted, that all paid adult games eventually returned, or that a single card company publicly ordered itch.io to remove all NSFW material. The platform described an ongoing audit and a gradual reintroduction process, while later support information documented the more limited path for free content.
The episode illustrates a structural vulnerability for small and open digital storefronts. A platform may host the files and operate the catalog, but payment companies can determine whether transactions are possible. When the catalog is large, lightly curated, and dependent on creator tagging, the platform may respond to a narrow compliance concern with a broad classification exercise. The resulting consequences fall not only on the titles that prompted scrutiny, but also on creators whose work is legal, fictional, and materially different from the content under dispute.
Itch.io’s July 2025 action was consequently both a payment-compliance response and a distribution shock. The partial return of free adult pages reduced the scope of the initial blackout, but it did not restore the old arrangement in which adult creators could assume that hosting, discovery, and paid distribution would operate together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did itch.io delete all adult games in July 2025?
No. Itch.io initially deindexed adult NSFW content from browse and search pages, which made many projects undiscoverable without necessarily deleting them. Some pages were permanently removed, but the available evidence does not provide a complete count of deletions versus deindexing.
Could buyers still access adult games they had already purchased?
Itch.io said buyers should retain access through their libraries, provided the creator had not removed the project page or files. That was a stated general policy, not an unconditional guarantee for every title.
Did Collective Shout directly order itch.io to remove all adult content?
The documented action by Collective Shout was to pressure payment and card companies over games featuring rape, incest, and child-abuse themes. Itch.io made the decision to deindex adult content and described its own payment-infrastructure concerns.
Were paid adult games restored after the crackdown?
The documented July 31 restoration covered free adult NSFW content whose payments were disabled. Itch.io said paid content would be reintroduced slowly while payment support was still under discussion. The sources reviewed do not establish a wholesale restoration of paid adult games.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why did itch.io review so many projects instead of only a few controversial titles?
Itch.io said its open user-generated-content model included more than two million product pages and that creator-provided tagging was not reliable enough for a narrowly targeted review. It therefore applied a broader audit to adult-tagged and otherwise NSFW-associated pages.
The Bottom Line
The July 2025 itch.io crackdown was less a single blanket legal ban than a broad platform response to payment pressure. Adult projects were pushed out of search and browse, some were removed, paid 18-plus content lost Stripe support, and only free adult material began returning under conditional rules. The episode left unresolved how much power payment intermediaries should have over the visibility and sale of lawful fictional work—and how secure digital ownership is when a platform or creator later withdraws a page.
