The premise brings together marriage, gambling, desire and the divide between outward respectability and private longing. The Associated Press describes the film as a queer story set against the period’s social conventions; that is the review’s framing, rather than Sony’s synopsis.

Is On Swift Horses based on a book?
Yes. The film is adapted from Shannon Pufahl’s novel of the same name. The official credits establish the adaptation, but do not describe specific changes from the book. A detailed film-versus-novel comparison would need to examine how each version handles Muriel’s and Julius’s storylines, their relative perspectives, postwar constraints, queer desire, gambling and horse racing; the available official synopsis alone does not establish where the versions differ.
