The available evidence is not strong enough to publish a reliable age-ranked list of living territory-era wrestlers as of October 8, 2026.
How “territory days” is defined here
This article uses “territory days” to mean the mid-century period when regional wrestling promotions operated across distinct areas and wrestlers worked for multiple promoters. The Simon & Schuster publisher description of Tim Hornbaker’s Death of the Territories defines a territory as “a region in which a promoter operated, from one city to multiple states.” The book’s description also discusses the National Wrestling Alliance and the regional promotions. This is a useful historical frame, not a single cutoff that fits every wrestler or country.
To rank candidates fairly, each would need a reliable full birth date, evidence of meaningful work in regional promotions during this period, and recent, credible confirmation that the person is alive. Ages would then be calculated at the same cutoff date—October 8, 2026—and candidates sorted by full birth date. Birth year alone cannot settle the order when two wrestlers were born in the same year.
Provisional lead: Bill Verna
The Royal Albert Hall Archives catalogue identifies Bill Verna as an Australian wrestler born in Perth in 1929 and describes his international career, including work in Europe and the United Kingdom. Its record supports his birth year and career connection, but does not establish his current living status. See the Bill Verna catalogue record.

#1 Best Overall
A compiled Wikipedia list describes Verna as the oldest living retired male wrestler and gives an approximate age range of 95–96. That entry is editable, and the reviewed material does not provide recent independent confirmation that he is alive. It is therefore not enough to state as a current fact that Verna is the oldest living wrestler, or to assign him an exact age in 2026. The list is useful as a lead, not as a verified ranking.
Why a complete age ranking is not established
The compiled list includes other living-status claims and career entries, but those do not amount to an independently verified, complete set of wrestlers who meet the territory-era definition above. A list of names and birth years cannot by itself confirm current living status, resolve exact age order, or show that every candidate fits the same historical scope.
The same list attributes a figure of 43 living veterans over 75 to Wikipedia contributors in 2024, describing them as part of the “Golden Age of Wrestling” (1950s–1970s). That is a secondary compiled-list figure, not a current independently validated census. It should not be treated as the number of living territory-era wrestlers today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a dependable ranking would require
- Birth date: a reliable biographical or archival source giving the full date, not just a birth year.
- Territory-era fit: evidence of meaningful work in regional promotions during the defined mid-century period.
- Living status: recent and credible confirmation, rather than an old or editable list entry.
- Consistent age calculation: ages computed at one stated cutoff date and ordered by full birth date.
Until those checks are met for a consistent candidate set, presenting numbered places would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.
