Oh. What. Fun. Rotten Tomatoes Reviews: Why Critics Say the Christmas Comedy Falls Flat

Critics largely fault Oh. What. Fun. for rushing its premise and underusing its cast, but some reviewers find warmth in Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance and its portrait of maternal exhaustion.

Oh. What. Fun. has an appealing cast and a story about a mother whose holiday work goes unnoticed, but critics have questioned whether the comedy gives that premise enough room to breathe. On Apple TV’s listing checked October 8, 2026, it had a 35% Tomatometer score from 57 reviews—20 fresh and 37 rotten. That snapshot reflects a largely negative consensus, not unanimous disapproval: some reviewers found real value in Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance and the film’s portrait of maternal exhaustion.

What is Oh. What. Fun. about?

In this 2025 Amazon MGM Studios comedy, Claire Clauster is the organizer holding together her chaotic, affectionate family’s Christmas. After the family leaves her behind following a holiday outing she planned, Claire sets off on an adventure of her own while her relatives scramble to find her. The setup puts the often-invisible work of making a family holiday happen at the center of a broad Christmas comedy.

Apple TV lists the film as a U.S. production rated PG-13, with a runtime of 1 hour 47 minutes. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Claire; the listed cast also includes Denis Leary, Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Dominic Sessa, Jason Schwartzman and Eva Longoria. The Associated Press reported that it began streaming on Prime Video on December 3, 2025. Apple TV’s film listing and the AP review provide those film details.

What are the Rotten Tomatoes reviews?

Apple TV’s listing showed a 35% Tomatometer from 57 reviews when checked October 8, 2026: 20 reviews were fresh and 37 were rotten, with an average rating of 5.1. The percentage and review count are a dated, changeable snapshot, not a permanent score or a measure of every viewer’s response.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says: “Stuffing a whole lot of talent into a puny stocking, Oh. What. Fun.‘s murky holiday spirit and distracting product placement too often weigh down an appealing cast.” In other words, the consensus sees promise in the performers but argues that the film’s tone and commercial intrusions undermine it. The Rotten Tomatoes film page carries the consensus and review listings; Apple TV is the source for the score snapshot above.

Why did critics say the comedy falls flat?

The premise promises more than the story develops

Associated Press reviewer Lindsey Bahr argues that the film does too little with both its setup and its cast. Claire has cooked, cleaned, wrapped gifts and planned the family’s holiday, making her painful exclusion a clear turning point. Bahr’s objection is that the movie rushes through the premise rather than allowing its ensemble to build the convincing, lived-in family chemistry that could make Claire’s frustration land. In her December 3, 2025 review, she calls it a movie that “does very little with its setup and terrific cast.”

The comic tone can blunt the emotional point

The story’s subject—maternal exhaustion and the unpaid work of sustaining a holiday—could support either sharp comedy or a more affecting family drama. Rotten Tomatoes’ description of the film’s “murky holiday spirit” captures a common complaint: the festive comedy does not always make its emotional direction clear. The consensus also calls out distracting product placement, another element it says pulls attention away from the cast and story.

A strong cast is not the same as a fully realized ensemble

The mismatch between the cast’s promise and the characters’ development is central to the negative response. Bahr notes that several performers, including Danielle Brooks, Joan Chen, Maude Apatow and Rose Abdoo, appear in almost cameo-sized roles. For viewers who expect a family comedy to earn its chaos through distinct personalities and believable relationships, a crowded cast can feel like a missed opportunity rather than a strength.

Is every review negative?

No. Le Monde critic Audrey Fournier reads the film more sympathetically, calling it a Christmas movie for people who are not fans of the genre. She praises Pfeiffer and finds the film’s most meaningful idea in the exhaustion of mothers. Her review describes it as “funnier and less corny than most” and values its unflinching attention to maternal fatigue, including after children have left home.

Fournier does not treat the film as a complete success: she says the family’s neuroses could have been pushed further. That qualification points to the same weakness Bahr identifies, but with a different emphasis. For Bahr, the thinly developed family makes the premise feel underused; for Fournier, the maternal perspective remains worthwhile even when the family dynamics lack depth. Rotten Tomatoes also excerpts a favorable Mamamia review by Chelsea Hui, who sees the unilateral labor of sustaining holiday joy as the film’s emotional center. The Le Monde review offers a clear counterpoint to the aggregator’s prevailing view.

Is Oh. What. Fun. worth watching if you like Christmas movies?

It may suit viewers who are most interested in Pfeiffer and a story about the work mothers do to make family celebrations happen, especially if they are open to a Christmas film that is less invested in conventional holiday cheer. The case against it is stronger for viewers who want tightly developed family dynamics, sustained comic momentum or a story that fully follows through on its premise. The reviews suggest a real divide between the film’s subject and its execution: its theme resonates with some critics even as its pacing, tone and shallow ensemble disappoint others.
