OBS YouTube Stream Stuck at 30 FPS: Encoder Settings to Check

A viewer’s 30 fps playback option does not necessarily mean OBS sent 30 fps. Check OBS output, the source and system load, then verify YouTube’s incoming stream.

If your OBS stream looks capped at 30 fps, first check Settings > Video > Common FPS Value and confirm it is set to 60. Then verify that your source can supply 60 fps, OBS can render and encode it, and YouTube actually received a 60 fps input. A viewer’s 30 fps playback option alone does not prove OBS sent 30 fps: YouTube creates multiple playback renditions from an incoming stream.

1. Set the frame rate OBS is supposed to send

In OBS, open Settings > Video and inspect Common FPS Value. This setting controls the desired output frame rate; it does not automatically follow a game, camera, or capture source. OBS says the common FPS value should match the desired output FPS, with 30 and 60 as examples (OBS Studio Overview Guide).

  1. Open Settings > Video.
  2. Set Common FPS Value to 60 if you want a 60 fps stream. If your system or source cannot sustain that rate, test at 30 instead.
  3. Check Output (Scaled) Resolution. The base canvas and scaled output are separate settings; the scaled output is the resolution sent to the stream.
  4. Apply the settings and run a test with the same scene, motion, and sources you expect to use live.

Do not assume that setting a game or camera to 60 fps also changed OBS’s output. Confirm the value in OBS itself.

2. Confirm the source and capture chain can supply 60 fps

A 60 fps OBS output setting cannot create genuine 60 fps motion from a source that only provides 30 fps. Check the actual input path: camera, capture source, game capture, or other media input. Look for a 30 fps option or limit in the source’s own settings, and compare its available rate with OBS’s selected output rate.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Which cameras, capture devices, drivers, and input paths can supply 60 fps depends on the specific equipment and configuration. If the input itself is limited to 30 fps, changing OBS bitrate or encoder preset will not remove that limit.

3. Check whether OBS can render and encode the selected output

Rendering scenes uses GPU resources, and a GPU bottleneck can prevent OBS from keeping up. Higher output resolution and frame rate increase the workload. Test a representative scene with typical motion and sources, then inspect OBS’s rendering and encoding performance indicators. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing resolution or frame rate when the system cannot keep up; 30 fps is a reasonable fallback for an unstable 60 fps target (OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • If rendering is overloaded: simplify the scene or reduce output resolution or frame rate.
  • If encoding is overloaded: reduce the workload or consider a hardware encoder supported by your operating system, hardware, and drivers. Hardware encoding availability and behavior vary by platform (OBS Hardware Encoding).
  • If performance is stable at 30 but not 60: use 30 fps unless you can change the workload and verify that the higher rate remains stable.

A stable 30 fps stream is better than an unstable 60 fps target. Neither a different encoder preset nor buying hardware is a guaranteed fix: first identify whether the source, rendering, or encoding path is the constraint.

4. Verify the incoming stream in YouTube Live Control Room

Before interpreting a viewer’s playback menu, check what YouTube reports it received. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates, so playback options describe available renditions rather than necessarily mirroring the encoder input (OBS Transcodes / Transcoding).

  1. Start a test stream and open YouTube’s Live Control Room.
  2. Review the detected incoming resolution and frame rate, along with stream health and any messages.
  3. Compare those incoming properties with OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value.
  4. If YouTube reports the intended input but viewers see a 30 fps option, distinguish that playback rendition from the incoming encoder signal. If YouTube reports 30 fps input, continue checking OBS output, source capability, and system performance.

YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health. It normally detects incoming resolution and frame rate automatically; a custom stream key can enable manual stream-resolution selection (YouTube: Manage live stream settings). YouTube accepts incoming frame rates up to 60 fps, but that ceiling does not guarantee every OBS setup can deliver 60 reliably.

5. Check the encoder settings that affect compatibility and quality

For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube’s encoder guidance covers codec, rate control, keyframes, and picture format. These settings matter for compatibility and stream quality, but bitrate is not a frame-rate switch. Match the applicable guidance to the codec and input format you actually use (YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

  • Recommended advanced settings: progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  • SDR color: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit color depth.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingestion bitrates

The figures below are YouTube’s current H.264 live-ingestion recommendations, accessed in 2026. They are not guaranteed minimum connection speeds and are not upload-video recommendations. For AV1 or H.265, use that codec’s separate row on YouTube’s settings page rather than transferring these H.264 values.

Input format YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

Choose the bitrate row for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. Raising bitrate alone does not change OBS’s Common FPS Value, increase the source frame rate, or resolve a rendering or encoding bottleneck.

OBS is set to 30 fps Settings > Video > Common FPS Value Select 60 for a 60 fps target, then test; use 30 if the system cannot sustain 60.
