Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If OBS started reporting “Encoding overloaded” after a Windows graphics driver update, treat the update as a reasonable suspect—not a proven cause. First save a log from the affected session and check OBS Statistics to determine whether the problem is rendering lag, encoding lag, or network dropped frames. Then reduce load and test one change at a time; roll back the driver only if the timing and available rollback option make that a useful test.
What “encoding overloaded” means—and what it does not
The warning means OBS is not completing some encoding work on time. It does not identify the cause. OBS also uses the GPU to render and composite scenes, even when you select the CPU-based x264 encoder, so GPU contention or rendering delays can be relevant to an encoding warning.
A graphics-driver update immediately before the first symptoms makes the driver worth investigating, but timing alone cannot establish that it caused the problem. The result depends on your GPU, driver, encoder, scene, output settings, and what else is using system resources.
First identify which kind of lag OBS reports
Save a log from the problem session
Before changing settings, reproduce the issue if practical and save the OBS log for that session. Note the OBS version, Windows version and build, GPU model, graphics-driver version and date, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and whether the driver arrived through Windows Update or the GPU or computer manufacturer. Those details make later comparisons more useful; without them, a specific failing driver cannot be identified.

Check OBS Statistics
Open View → Stats in OBS. Check rendering lag and skipped frames due to encoding lag. These point to OBS workload or processing constraints and should not be confused with network dropped frames.
If the statistic instead shows network dropped frames, OBS describes that as an unstable connection or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. Follow a connection-focused diagnosis rather than assuming a faster GPU, different encoder, or capture card will fix it. See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Reduce system and OBS load before changing the driver
Make one change at a time, then test under comparable conditions and check the same OBS statistics. This helps identify which change mattered instead of leaving you with several simultaneous variables.

Free GPU capacity
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator.
- Close other programs you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If you are capturing a game, limit its frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync, and reduce demanding in-game graphics settings if necessary. An uncapped game can leave too little GPU capacity for OBS to render its scenes on time.
These are OBS’s recommended starting points for GPU overload; they are not proof that the driver is at fault. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Simplify scenes or reduce output load if needed
- Temporarily remove or disable nonessential browser sources and filters, or test with a simpler scene.
- If the problem continues, lower the output resolution or frame rate. For example, test 30 FPS if 60 FPS is unstable, then compare the result with your saved baseline.
- Reducing the base canvas resolution is another option, but it is more disruptive to scene layout. Try less disruptive load reductions first.
Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce workload, but it also changes the stream’s output. Choose a stable setting that still suits the material and audience rather than assuming the highest setting is necessary.
Test whether the driver update is involved
Roll back in Device Manager if Windows offers the option
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the affected adapter, and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows if asked. Then reproduce the same OBS workload and compare its statistics with the baseline.
Microsoft says rollback requires administrator access and may be unavailable if Windows no longer has a previous driver to restore. A more stable result after rollback supports testing the driver hypothesis, but does not prove the update was the sole cause. See Microsoft’s Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows guidance for Windows 10 and 11.

If rollback is unavailable or makes things worse
Do not install a driver package from an unfamiliar download site. Check the official support channel for your GPU or computer manufacturer for a compatible driver, taking account of the device model and Windows version. If the symptoms began after a manufacturer-provided update, compare the system’s behavior before and after any supported driver change, using the same OBS test where possible.
Check HAGS and GPU assignment when they apply
Test Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
OBS identifies Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) as a possible source of performance issues and hardware-encoder failures. If the setting is available, turn it off in Windows Graphics settings, restart the computer, and repeat the test. Treat this as an experiment, not a universal fix; record whether the result changes. See OBS’s HAGS guidance.

Check which GPU runs OBS on hybrid systems
If you use a laptop or a system with integrated and discrete GPUs, inspect OBS’s assignment in Windows Graphics settings. The appropriate GPU can depend on how you capture: OBS’s guide distinguishes game or window capture from display capture, so do not apply a laptop-specific choice to every desktop or capture type. See the OBS GPU Selection Guide.

Review the encoder after checking workload and drivers
OBS supports hardware encoders such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync when the hardware and driver support them. Hardware encoding can move work away from the CPU, but it is not automatically the best choice for every machine: available encoders, driver behavior, GPU load, and workload all matter. A hardware encoder can still be affected by GPU contention or compatibility problems.
Compare x264 and a compatible hardware encoder only when both are available, testing the same scene and output settings. Watch CPU use and OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics, and keep the encoder that performs reliably on your system. See OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common symptoms and what to try next
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag | Encoding work is not completing on time; CPU, GPU, encoder compatibility, or overall workload may be involved. | Reduce system contention, simplify the scene, lower output load if needed, and compare a compatible hardware encoder where available. |
| Rendering lag in OBS Statistics | OBS may not have enough GPU time to render and composite scenes. | Run OBS as administrator, limit a game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, close known GPU-heavy programs, and simplify scenes. |
| Network dropped frames | Connection instability or bitrate the connection cannot sustain. | Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance; do not treat this statistic as evidence of an encoding bottleneck. |
| Warning began immediately after a driver update | The update is a plausible suspect, but the timing alone is not a diagnosis. | Save a baseline log, try reversible load reductions, then test Device Manager rollback if available. |
| Hardware encoder fails or performance changes with HAGS | HAGS can contribute on some systems, according to OBS. | Turn HAGS off, restart, and compare results; restore the prior setting if the test does not help. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option from troubleshooting an OBS session: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to reinstall OBS after a graphics driver update?
The supplied troubleshooting steps do not establish that reinstalling OBS is necessary. Start by checking the affected session’s statistics and testing reversible load reductions.
Can I tell which exact driver caused the warning from the message alone?
No. The warning does not name the cause; a session log and system details are needed to investigate your particular setup.
