Where to set the keyframe interval in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings, then select Output.
- If the streaming encoder controls are not visible, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- In the streaming encoder section, find Keyframe Interval and set it to 2 seconds. The control applies to the streaming encoder, not a recording encoder setting.
- Save the change and run a representative test stream before your event.
OBS labels and control placement can vary by version and selected encoder. Older OBS forum guidance points to Advanced output mode as the manual route, but it is historical rather than current product documentation. If your interface differs, look specifically for the streaming encoder’s keyframe interval; do not assume every OBS version displays identical controls.
Why YouTube recommends 2 seconds
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The two-second value is the recommended target; four seconds is the stated ceiling, not the preferred setting. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
Seconds versus frames: avoid a unit mistake
The OBS interval control described in historical forum guidance is expressed in seconds. A custom x264 keyint parameter, by contrast, is expressed in frames. Do not enter a frame count into a field that expects seconds, or treat a seconds value as a frame count.

- At 30 frames per second, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames.
- At another frame rate, the equivalent frame count changes. Multiply the frame rate by the desired interval in seconds.
The 60-frame example is a conversion, not a separate YouTube recommendation. Historical explanations of the OBS field and custom x264 parameter appeared in OBS Project forum posts in 2015; use them as unit guidance rather than assurance that current OBS controls are unchanged.
Test the stream before going live
A saved setting alone does not establish that a stream is healthy. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual stream and monitoring stream health messages during the event. Use a representative test to check that the stream reaches YouTube and that its health indicators do not report problems.

Troubleshooting
The keyframe field is missing
Check that Settings → Output is in Advanced mode, then inspect the streaming encoder section. The exact labels and controls can depend on OBS version and selected encoder.
A custom x264 value does not seem to mean two seconds
Check the unit. A custom keyint is a frame count, so convert using the stream frame rate; the OBS interval field discussed above is seconds-based. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames.

YouTube reports stream-health problems
Run a new representative test and read YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than assuming the interval is the only possible cause. Follow YouTube’s encoder guidance and verify the stream under audio and motion conditions similar to the real event.
