If OBS disconnects at the moment Windows enters connected standby, keep the PC awake for the broadcast and investigate the power state before changing OBS bitrate settings. “Connected” standby does not guarantee that OBS’s encoder and live connection will keep running as they do while Windows is awake.
Why the stream drops when Windows sleeps
Modern Standby is a low-power state in which Windows manages network activity; it is not simply normal desktop operation with the screen off. Microsoft says Adaptive Connected Standby became the default connectivity behavior on Modern Standby systems starting with Windows 10 version 2004. On battery, Windows controls connectivity during sleep: some supported scenarios may retain network access, while otherwise “the system will quiesce network activity during sleep, while providing instant connectivity upon resume.” Microsoft’s Modern Standby networking documentation describes network behavior, not a guarantee that OBS encoding, capture sources, or its streaming connection continue running.
OBS needs an active connection to YouTube’s ingest server. If the interruption consistently coincides with standby entry, the power transition is the first thing to check. If OBS also disconnects while Windows remains awake, treat that as a separate network or encoder problem.
Keep Windows awake during the broadcast
- Confirm the timing. Note whether the disconnect happens exactly as the display turns off, after an idle timeout, or when you close the laptop lid. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room and OBS to establish whether the encoder disconnected or only the broadcast status changed.
- Prevent automatic sleep while streaming. In Windows Settings, look under System and the power or screen-and-sleep controls for the sleep timeout; set the sleep timeout long enough that the PC stays awake for the entire broadcast. On a laptop, check the lid-close action in the device’s power settings if closing the lid triggers sleep. Labels and available choices vary by Windows version and device, so use the settings available on your system rather than assuming one universal path.
- Keep the computer powered and ventilated. For a long broadcast, connect a laptop to power and ensure it has adequate airflow. Turning off the display is not the same as putting Windows to sleep; verify that the chosen display setting leaves the computer awake.
- Test the change during a private or unlisted stream. Leave OBS running beyond the previous sleep timeout and check that YouTube continues receiving the stream. Avoid changing unrelated encoder settings unless the stream still fails while the PC remains awake.
Check which standby state the PC supports
Windows includes built-in diagnostics that can show whether a PC supports Modern Standby and what networking state it reports. Open Terminal or Command Prompt and run:

powercfg /aLook for Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) and whether it is reported as Network Connected or Network Disconnected. This identifies the sleep capability and reported network mode; it does not prove that OBS will keep encoding during sleep.

powercfg /sprReview the generated report for the standby sessions around the time of the drop. SleepStudy records whether a session was connected; use that information alongside OBS and YouTube status rather than treating network-connected status as proof that the stream encoder remained active.
If OBS disconnects while Windows stays awake
OBS describes dropped frames and disconnections as signs of connection instability between the computer and the remote ingest server. Follow a network diagnosis instead of assuming sleep is responsible. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers connection and dropped-frame checks.

- Check upload stability and bitrate. Confirm that available upload capacity is stable and sufficient for the encoder bitrate. A bitrate adjustment is relevant if the stream struggles while awake; it does not stop Windows from entering standby.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming generally because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A wired test can help isolate Wi-Fi trouble, but a cable or adapter does not prevent sleep.
- Test the network path. Temporarily test without a VPN or network-prioritization/optimization utility, and check whether security software, network drivers, the router, or the ISP may be affecting the connection. Change one factor at a time and restore protections or settings after testing.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder status. YouTube advises creators to monitor stream health, check the encoder, and test outbound internet connectivity. Use its stream troubleshooting guidance to distinguish an encoder issue from a YouTube-side or outbound-network problem.
What YouTube auto-start and auto-stop do
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control whether streaming from the encoder starts or stops the broadcast. They do not change Windows power settings and cannot keep the PC awake. Use them to manage broadcast lifecycle behavior, not as a fix for a computer entering standby. See YouTube’s stream settings for the available controls.
