YouTube’s current 4K30 bitrate recommendation is 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265; choose only a rate your encoder and connection can sustain. Playlist playback needs its own verified OBS source workflow: test it through item changes before going live.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live at 4K30
| Setting | Recommended value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 3840×2160 | This is YouTube’s 2160p output size. OBS’s canvas is the workspace for arranging sources; the output resolution is what OBS sends to the stream. OBS explains its output settings. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Set the Common FPS Value under OBS Video settings to 30. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. |
| Video bitrate | 42 Mbps for H.264; 30 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC | These are YouTube’s recommended 4K30 encoder bitrates, not guarantees of stable performance. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | YouTube recommends a two-second frequency and sets four seconds as the maximum in its guidance. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended | YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS support and recommends RTMPS. |
| Latency | Normal | YouTube uses normal latency for 2160p; its low-latency option is not available at 4K. |
See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current codec-specific recommendations. OBS and YouTube both advise testing before the live event, because a setting that works on paper may exceed a particular computer’s encoding capacity or internet upload stability.
Configure the YouTube stream key and OBS output
- Create or choose the live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the stream URL and key. YouTube permits reuse of prior stream settings and keys; treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s guidance for streaming with an encoder.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service, or enter the appropriate server and stream key if configuring the connection manually. Confirm the selected destination and account before starting.
- Set the video dimensions and frame rate. Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Value to 30. Set the canvas to match your media if practical; the canvas controls source layout, while output resolution determines the stream dimensions.
- Choose an encoder and bitrate. Open Settings → Output, select the streaming output mode and an encoder that your system supports. Set rate control to CBR. Use the YouTube recommendation for the codec OBS will actually send: H.264 at 42 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 at 30 Mbps. OBS’s labels and available encoders vary with operating system and hardware; do not select a codec unless your encoder and YouTube ingest configuration support it.
- Set the keyframe interval. In the encoder’s streaming options, specify 2 seconds. Do not exceed four seconds for YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance. Consistent keyframes also support viewers switching playback quality.
- Test before the broadcast. Run the intended media, audio, transitions and playlist changes while streaming privately or unlisted. Check OBS’s performance indicators and YouTube’s stream health. Make sure the connection has headroom above the video bitrate for network variation and other traffic; if it cannot reliably sustain the target rate, lower the bitrate or output resolution rather than accepting repeated buffering.
Choose a bitrate your setup can really sustain
YouTube’s current encoder table gives separate 4K30 figures by codec. The minimums are lower than the recommendations, but they are not equivalent quality targets; image detail, motion, encoder workload and network reliability all affect the result.
| Codec sent to YouTube | Listed minimum for 4K30 | Recommended bitrate for 4K30 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
The values are YouTube-published platform guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not independent tests of a particular computer, encoder or internet service. Favor the recommended target only if your upload connection can carry it consistently and the encoder can produce 4K30 without overload. A fast speed-test result alone does not establish sustained live-stream stability.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Codec choice is a practical trade-off rather than a universal winner. YouTube publishes different bitrate recommendations by codec; the best available option depends on encoder support, image quality at the bitrate you can sustain, and the processing load on your system. OBS cautions that capability varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Its system requirements guidance notes that compatible hardware does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully.
Set up and verify playlist playback
OBS’s video and output settings do not determine how a playlist advances or repeats. The right setup depends on how the media enters OBS—for example, through a built-in media source, VLC or an add-on. YouTube’s own playlist feature should not be assumed to feed an OBS live encoder.

- Choose the source workflow. Decide which OBS source or supported add-on will play the files. Confirm that it can load the intended formats and handle the playlist’s ordering, looping and item transitions as needed.
- Build the scene around the media. Add the playback source to the scene, fit or crop it on the 3840Ă—2160 canvas, and confirm the output is not unintentionally stretched, letterboxed or clipped.
- Check audio and boundaries. Play every relevant type of file, inspect audio levels, and watch transitions between playlist items. Verify what happens at the end of the list and after a playback interruption.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Observe the stream in YouTube through multiple item changes and for long enough to expose likely interruptions. Confirm the stream health remains good and that audio stays synchronized.
Playlist automation is source- and add-on-dependent, so there is no single reliable click path or loop setting that applies to every OBS installation. Verify the specific source’s behavior rather than assuming unattended playback will continue indefinitely.
Protect the stream and keep an archive
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the associated destination. Reset a compromised key in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check music, footage and reuse rights. A technically valid stream can still be interrupted or restricted by copyright claims. Make sure you have permission for every video and audio track you broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright guidance.
- Record locally as a backup. YouTube automatically archives 1440p and 2160p live streams, but says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. OBS can record while streaming; OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. See YouTube’s archive guidance and OBS recording output guidance.
- Understand viewer quality. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can select a quality suited to their device and connection. Your ingest setting is not the only playback version viewers may see.
Troubleshoot common 4K30 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or other traffic is competing for bandwidth. | Check sustained upload during a representative test. Reduce bitrate and, if needed, output resolution until the stream is stable. |
| OBS reports encoding overload or the stream stutters despite a stable connection | The encoder cannot keep up with 3840Ă—2160 at 30 fps, given the chosen codec and workload. | Check OBS performance and encoder selection. Reduce output resolution or workload, or use an encoder the system can sustain. |
| Stream starts at the wrong resolution or frame rate | Canvas and output settings may have been confused, or output scaling may be set differently from the intended format. | Recheck Settings → Video, especially Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value; verify the live output in YouTube. |
| Playlist stops, skips, or fails to advance | The chosen media source or add-on may not support the expected automation, or a file may fail to load. | Test each file and item boundary in a private or unlisted stream. Check the source’s own playlist and looping behavior; do not assume YouTube’s playlist controls OBS playback. |
| YouTube does not retain the full live archive | A stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured. | Record locally in OBS, preferably to MKV, and preserve the recording independently. |
| Unexpected stream appears on the channel | The stream key may have been exposed or reused on an unintended encoder. | Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the authorized OBS configuration. |
Or let it run in the cloud
