OBS YouTube Live Loop Uses Too Much CPU? Settings to Reduce Load

Check OBS’s encoder first, then reduce output demands and simplify the loop scene. Test each change before relying on it for a long YouTube stream.

If OBS is using too much CPU during a YouTube loop stream, first check which encoder is selected in Settings → Output. An x264 encoder uses the CPU; a compatible hardware encoder can move encoding work to a specialized GPU component. Then reduce output resolution or frame rate only as much as needed, simplify the loop scene, and test before relying on the changes live. The right settings depend on your encoder, computer, output, and scene—not just the fact that the video loops.

Diagnose the bottleneck before changing settings

CPU use varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS lists all four as factors in its system requirements guidance. A loop may have little visual movement, but its sources, filters, scaling, and encoding still require resources.

Start in OBS at Settings → Output and identify the streaming encoder. If it is x264, OBS is encoding in software on the CPU. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, it may shift encoding work off the CPU. Do not assume your computer has NVENC or another hardware option; availability and results depend on the hardware and platform. OBS explains the distinction in its hardware encoding guide.

Keep CPU and GPU problems separate while diagnosing. OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guide discusses rendering and encoding overload as well as GPU constraints; a GPU remedy is not automatically a CPU remedy. If OBS indicates rendering or encoding lag, identify which issue is occurring before choosing a fix. The machine and OBS details are unknown here, so no one configuration can be prescribed from the symptom alone. See the OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Choose an encoder that fits the computer

If OBS is using x264

x264 uses CPU capacity for encoding. If your system offers a compatible hardware encoder, try it and compare the resulting stream quality and performance. Hardware encoding is not a universal upgrade: the available encoder and its output quality depend on your system.

If you need to stay with x264

OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide lists the CPU Usage Preset veryfast as its baseline for advanced x264 recording settings. Treat that strictly as an x264 recording reference point, not as a guaranteed YouTube Live recommendation. Encoder presets affect the work and quality tradeoff; test your actual live output rather than assuming a preset will solve the problem.

Reduce output work without changing more than necessary

Lower the frame rate if 60 fps is not sustainable

In Settings → Video, reduce the output frame rate if OBS cannot sustain the current one. OBS recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps is too demanding. Lower frame rates reduce processing work, but motion looks less smooth. For a mostly static documentary loop, that tradeoff may be acceptable; footage with fast movement may make the difference more noticeable. Make the choice based on the content and your viewers’ needs.

Lower the output resolution before rebuilding the canvas

In Settings → Video, reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution to reduce the size of the stream OBS produces. The tradeoff is reduced image detail. OBS distinguishes this from lowering Base (Canvas) Resolution: changing the base canvas can disrupt the scene layout, requiring sources to be resized or repositioned. Try output scaling first; change the base canvas only if you remain constrained and are prepared to adjust the scene. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Simplify the loop scene and its sources

A scene can demand resources even when the stream itself is a simple loop. OBS notes that some sources may continue using resources while hidden. Temporarily simplify the scene to find out whether an overlay, source, or effect is contributing to the load.

  • Remove sources the loop does not need.
  • Disable complex animated overlays temporarily as a diagnostic; keep them off if they are not essential.
  • Reduce or remove expensive filters and effects that do not materially improve the programme.
  • Set browser sources to only the dimensions needed. If a browser source displays static content, consider replacing it with an image source.
  • Use media files sized appropriately for their display rather than unnecessarily large assets.

Change one group of sources or effects at a time and observe whether performance changes. OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guidance covers scene and source complexity among the possible causes of performance problems.

Free resources if other workloads are competing

If you are gaming or running GPU-heavy work at the same time, OBS suggests capping the game’s frame rate or reducing its graphics settings to free GPU resources. These steps target GPU competition; they are not a direct fix for x264 CPU encoding.

For GPU overload on Windows, OBS suggests trying to run OBS as administrator. Use that as a GPU-specific troubleshooting step, not as a guaranteed cure for high CPU use. The applicable steps are in the OBS troubleshooting guide.

Test the changes before depending on the stream

  1. Change one category at a time: encoder, output frame rate, output resolution, or scene complexity. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.
  2. Run a few minutes of recording or a test stream and review the result. Check that the loop plays as intended, the picture remains acceptable, and OBS no longer shows the same performance problem.
  3. If you change resolution or frame rate, inspect motion and fine detail in the output. If you change the encoder, compare image quality as well as resource use.
  4. Only use the revised setup for a long live session after it has behaved reliably in a short test. OBS recommends testing before going live in its Quick Start Guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded documentary videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than another setting inside OBS. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.
