Both OBS Studio and XSplit Broadcaster can loop prerecorded video for YouTube Live. OBS offers a built-in Media Source for looping one file and a VLC-backed source for playlists. XSplit offers video-file sources and a Video Playlist with continuous playback and looping effects. The practical difference is how you want to manage one file or a playlist—not a documented reliability advantage: the available product documentation does not establish that either encoder is more reliable or easier for every setup.
Which should you choose?
| Your workflow | Better fit to consider | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Loop one local video file | OBS Media Source or XSplit Video File source | OBS explicitly documents a Loop setting that restarts playback at the end. XSplit documents video-file sources and playback controls; its cited guidance describes looping effects for the Video Playlist source. |
| Play several local files in a playlist | Either | OBS uses its VLC Video source; VLC must be installed and its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture must match OBS. XSplit has a Video Playlist source under Scene Widgets. |
| Run continuously without keeping a computer on | StreamNeo | It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free. |
Choose based on the source type, playlist controls, and software you are comfortable setting up. YouTube lists both OBS and XSplit as encoder options. Their documentation describes features, not a controlled comparison of stability or ease of use. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance, OBS Media Sources, and XSplit’s Video Playlist guide.
Loop one video in OBS Studio
- Check YouTube eligibility first. Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. Check the current status in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s getting-started page.
- Add the file. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local video file. OBS documents this source for media files including video and audio.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS says this setting restarts the file after playback completes. Check the source in the preview to confirm the correct file and sound are playing.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube live event. Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio, then use the event’s encoder setup instructions to connect OBS. Treat the stream key as a credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share it; reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Preview before going live. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and audio before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video during the stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
For a playlist rather than a single file, use OBS’s VLC Video source and create the playlist there. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default. This route requires VLC to be installed; a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. Refer to the OBS Media Sources documentation for the source’s options.
Loop video in XSplit Broadcaster
- Prepare the YouTube live event. Verify that live streaming is enabled for your channel, then create or schedule the event and locate its encoder setup details. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days are among YouTube’s stated eligibility conditions. See YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- Choose the source type. Add a Video File source for a single local video, or choose Add Source > Scene Widgets > Video Playlist and add the files you want to play in sequence. XSplit documents continuous playback and looping effects for the Video Playlist source. Its video-source guidance also describes playback controls. See XSplit’s video-source information and playlist instructions.
- Connect to YouTube. Follow the event’s encoder instructions to configure XSplit for the broadcast. XSplit lists YouTube Live among its supported streaming sites; its supported-sites page documents that output option.
- Check the preview and rehearse. Confirm YouTube receives the intended video and audio, then let the source reach its loop point during a rehearsal. Check the transition between files or the end and restart of a single file, and monitor the stream’s audio and video. YouTube’s guidance recommends previewing and monitoring encoder streams; see YouTube streaming tips.
For either application, protect the stream key as you would a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings and update the encoder.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to test before a long or unattended broadcast
A successful preview confirms that a feed reaches YouTube, but a rehearsal with the actual content helps catch source and loop issues before a longer stream. Test the setup you intend to use rather than assuming one encoder will behave the same way on every computer.
- Let a single-file source reach the end and restart; listen and watch for an unwanted gap, abrupt cut, or change in audio.
- For a playlist, verify the order, transitions, audio levels, and whether playback continues as intended at the final item.
- Check the YouTube preview with the intended visibility setting and confirm the right stream and scene are being sent.
- Monitor the broadcast’s audio and video during the stream. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring; a computer-based setup also depends on the computer and connection remaining available.
- Confirm that you have the rights to broadcast both the video and its audio. A stream being prerecorded does not remove copyright obligations.
YouTube eligibility, copyright, and reused material
YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Its restrictions guidance identifies active copyright strikes and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast among grounds for live-stream restrictions. The cited policy pages do not say that looping prerecorded video is categorically prohibited. That is not a guarantee that any particular video is allowed: make sure you have the necessary rights to every video and audio track you broadcast, and check YouTube Studio for restrictions before scheduling. See YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance.

Keep the difference clear between permission to broadcast material and eligibility for monetization. The cited live-stream pages address access and restrictions; they do not establish that a particular reused-video format qualifies for monetization. Do not assume that looping content is automatically eligible or ineligible on that basis alone.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS playlist source is missing or unavailable | The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed, with matching 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. | Install the VLC version that matches OBS, then reopen or recheck the source options. Consult OBS’s source documentation. |
| Video plays once and stops in OBS | The Media Source Loop setting may be off. | Open the source properties and enable Loop; verify by letting playback reach the end. |
| XSplit playlist does not continue as expected | The selected source may be a Video File rather than Video Playlist, or the playlist’s playback/loop effect may not be configured as intended. | Check the source type and playlist controls against XSplit’s playlist guide, then rehearse the full sequence. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The event may not be active, the encoder may not be connected using the event’s current details, or the channel may not yet be eligible. | Check YouTube Studio’s live event and encoder setup, confirm live streaming is enabled, and review the eligibility requirements. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong | The selected file, source audio, or playlist item may not be the intended one. | Inspect the source in the encoder preview and YouTube preview; test the actual file and listen through the loop boundary. |
