OBS Replay Buffer lets you save a recent segment of your YouTube loop stream, but there is no single best duration or memory setting for every dedicated PC. Enable it in Settings → Output, choose the clip window you need, assign a Save Replay Buffer hotkey in Settings → Hotkeys, then test the stream and saved file under your actual workload.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
Replay Buffer is an OBS recording feature: it keeps recent footage available so you can save it when needed. It is separate from the settings that send your live program to YouTube. The replay duration controls how much recent footage you can recover; YouTube’s codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and transport settings govern the incoming live stream.
Enabling Replay Buffer alone does not assign the action that saves the buffer. You must configure a save hotkey, and you should test that it creates a usable file at the destination you expect.
Set up YouTube output before tuning the buffer
Configure OBS for the resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and bitrate you intend to stream. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for that specific combination rather than applying a bitrate from a different resolution, frame rate, or codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS, checking upload capacity with a speed test, testing with representative audio and motion, and watching stream health while live.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not make an unstable or unsuitable ingest signal safe. Select a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently and test the complete loop-stream workload; a speed test alone cannot establish that the PC will encode and stream reliably for an extended session.
If you are starting from an unfamiliar OBS setup, the Auto-Configuration Wizard can use your intended use, computer resources, and network conditions to suggest a starting point for live output. Treat that as a starting point, not proof that your particular loop and Replay Buffer configuration will remain stable over time.

Enable Replay Buffer and choose a duration
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer. The exact controls may vary with output mode and OBS release, so use the labels and estimates shown by the version installed on the dedicated PC.
- Set Maximum Replay Time to the length of the segment you actually need to recover. There is no universal duration: a longer window retains more footage but can require more memory, and the required amount depends on the configuration and implementation.
- Review OBS’s displayed estimated memory use or limit where available. Do not treat a particular RAM amount as a generally safe recommendation; test the selected duration on the target PC.
- Choose a clear recording/replay destination and filename convention, and confirm the destination drive has room for the files you expect to keep. OBS’s Recording Path setting specifies where recordings are written; no particular drive type or storage purchase is inherently required by Replay Buffer.
Assign the save hotkey and verify the file
- Open Settings → Hotkeys.
- Find Save Replay Buffer and assign a key combination that does not conflict with another OBS action or an application you use on the PC.
- Start Replay Buffer, run a representative portion of the loop, and trigger the hotkey.
- Open the resulting file and check its location, duration, picture, and audio. A successful hotkey press is not enough: confirm the clip itself contains the expected recent segment and plays correctly.
The OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide strongly recommends testing everything as well as possible before the first live stream. Do this before relying on Replay Buffer during an important broadcast.
Choose settings by testing the actual workload
A PC that meets OBS’s minimum system requirements is not thereby guaranteed to sustain a particular resolution, frame rate, scene, encoder, stream, and replay window together. Encoding workload varies with those choices. If your output mode offers separate recording settings, a separate recording encoder can consume additional resources compared with using the stream encoder.

- Start with the recovery need: choose a buffer duration that covers the segment you would genuinely want to save.
- Check the resource estimate: note OBS’s estimate or limit where shown, but do not turn it into a blanket memory prescription.
- Test representative content: include the motion, audio, scenes, resolution, and frame rate used by the real loop.
- Check both outputs: monitor OBS performance and YouTube stream health while also confirming that a replay file is written and is the expected length.
- Adjust based on evidence: if you see dropped frames, encoding overload, or a replay shorter than expected, reduce workload or revisit the configuration and test again. Adding memory alone is not a guaranteed fix.
Starting OBS automatically is not the same as unattended recovery
OBS documents separate launch parameters for starting the stream and Replay Buffer: --startstreaming and --startreplaybuffer. They are building blocks for startup automation; confirm their behavior with your installed OBS release and operating system before using them in production.
Those launch parameters do not establish that OBS will recover automatically from a power failure, network outage, expired account session, or application crash. For an unattended channel, monitor OBS dropped frames and encoding performance, YouTube stream health, available disk space, and whether the expected replay file is actually being produced. Test the intended duration and recovery procedures rather than assuming startup flags guarantee continuous operation.

Save a reproducible OBS configuration
If you need to recreate or maintain the setup, save it in an OBS Profile. Profiles include Stream, Video, and Output settings, making them useful for keeping the intended YouTube output and recording configuration together. Still verify the hotkey, destination, and actual replay output after switching profiles or updating OBS.
