Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor one podcast episode that should repeat, use OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a sequence of episodes, use VLC Video, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC Video requires VLC installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. These sources control playback inside OBS—not the YouTube connection—so configure and test the stream separately.
Which OBS source should you use?
| What you need | Use | Loop behavior | Dependency or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat a single local episode | Media Source | Enable Loop; its documented default is Off. | OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists supported formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Test your actual file in the OBS version and operating system you plan to use. |
| Play several episodes in sequence, then repeat the sequence | VLC Video | Enable Loop Playlist; its documented default is On. | Requires VLC. OBS documentation specifies matching architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
Both options are playback sources within OBS. Neither one connects OBS to YouTube or determines stream quality. The official OBS documentation describes their controls, but it does not establish comparative reliability or guarantee uninterrupted playlist edits during a live broadcast.
Set up one episode with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the podcast. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if prompted, then select OK. In its properties, choose the local episode file.
- Enable Loop so playback starts again when the file ends. The documented default is Off, so verify the checkbox rather than assuming it is active.
- Review the source’s activation and inactive behavior controls. OBS documents restart-on-activation and close-when-inactive options; choose behavior that suits your scene switching, then test it.
- Select OK and play the scene in OBS. Confirm that both the picture and audio are present and that playback restarts at the end of the episode.
Set up an episode playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC before configuring the source. Match its architecture to OBS: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the podcast scene. In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video. Name the source if desired and select OK.
- In the source properties, add the episode files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Check the displayed list before going live.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to start again after the final item. OBS’s documented default is On, but confirm the setting.
- Choose the VLC source’s Visibility Behavior. It can continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible; the documented default is stop when not visible and restart when visible. This setting concerns whether the source is visible in the OBS scene, not whether the OBS application window is on screen.
- Test scene switches and let the playlist reach its end in a rehearsal. Confirm that its visibility behavior and restart point match your intended show flow.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key. Use YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for the connection details.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details as directed by YouTube. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload bitrate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Do not copy a preset meant for a different codec or resolution.
- Before a public broadcast, test with representative podcast audio and video. Start the encoder, check the preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and read any warnings or messages it shows.
- When the signal is ready, start the live broadcast through YouTube’s controls as required by your setup. Monitor both OBS playback and YouTube stream health; successful looping inside OBS alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is not a guarantee for streams lasting longer. Plan how you will handle an archive or restart if your intended broadcast exceeds that duration.
Playlist changes, rights, and monetization
Changing an episode list while live
The OBS documentation explains playlist playback but does not establish whether edits made to a VLC playlist during an active broadcast always preserve uninterrupted playback. If you need to change episodes live, rehearse the exact edit on a private or unlisted stream first. Do not assume an edit will be seamless.

Make sure you have the rights to stream the material
Only stream podcast audio, video, music, and other material you have permission to use on YouTube. The source choice does not change copyright obligations, and the controls described here cannot determine whether a particular episode is cleared.
Looping and monetization are different questions
A loop control is a technical playback feature, not a guarantee of monetization eligibility or a blanket prohibition. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025 to clarify its treatment of repetitive or mass-produced material under its “inauthentic content” policy, says monetized content should have materially varied substance and creative, educational, or other viewer value. A channel should assess its content against the policy rather than infer eligibility from the fact that it streams through OBS.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source stops after one episode | Loop may be off. | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop, then test through the end of the file. |
| Playlist does not repeat | Loop Playlist may be off, or the expected files may not be in the playlist. | Check the playlist contents and enable Loop Playlist; run a rehearsal to confirm the sequence restarts. |
| VLC Video source is unavailable or will not load media | VLC may not be installed or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC and, for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and test the source again. |
| Playback pauses or restarts after switching scenes | The VLC source’s Visibility Behavior may stop or restart playback when it is not visible. | Choose continue, pause, or stop behavior deliberately and test the exact scene-switch sequence. |
| OBS plays correctly but YouTube has no healthy picture or audio | Playback and transmission are separate; connection settings, key, encoder settings, or stream health may be at fault. | Check the stream URL and key in OBS, use YouTube’s settings for the selected codec and resolution, and inspect Live Control Room warnings. |
| A live playlist edit disrupts playback | Seamless behavior during live edits is not established by the documented controls. | Use a private or unlisted rehearsal to validate the planned edit. For a live show, avoid relying on an untested update. |
