“Canonical” is not an official Oasis designation. It is Kristen S. Hé’s description of the band after seeing them at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on October 31, 2025: a reunion lineup and performance she thought might become the defining version listeners carry in their minds.
What does “the canonical version” of Oasis mean?
The phrase comes from Hé’s Rolling Stone AU/NZ review, published November 1, 2025. It is a critic’s judgment about one concert, not a title bestowed by the band or an official ranking of its lineups. Hé’s question to readers was whether this was what they had imagined seeing Oasis perform.
Her answer was shaped by the contrast between memory and the present. The 2025 reunion was not a recreation of Oasis at Knebworth in 1996, when the group was making its legend in real time. Nor did it resemble the band’s 2005 Australian shows, which Hé contrasts with the scale and reception of the Melbourne performance. She saw this iteration as its own possible legacy: a band whose songs had accumulated meaning over decades, now played together again.
What happened at the Melbourne concert?
Oasis played Marvel Stadium on Friday, October 31, 2025, one of three Melbourne dates. Rolling Stone AU/NZ reported that about 70,000 people were expected at each date; that is an expected attendance figure, not a confirmed count for this show. Ball Park Music opened, and its frontman, Sam Cromack, called Oasis “the greatest band in the world.”

Hé describes Liam and Noel Gallagher walking onto the stage together and a crowd ready to respond. She singles out “Acquiesce,” where the brothers traded verses and choruses, as a moment that drew a particularly strong reaction. The set began with nine rock songs in a row, then ranged across familiar hits and beloved B-sides. According to the review, it included no songs recorded after 2002.
The songs that shaped the set
The review highlights “Morning Glory,” “Some Might Say,” “The Masterplan,” “Cast No Shadow,” and “Live Forever,” alongside the closing sequence of “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” “Wonderwall,” and “Champagne Supernova.” Hé describes the brothers’ shared vocals on “Cast No Shadow” and “Live Forever” as especially affecting, and the final three songs as surreal.

That setlist helped support her broader reading of the show: it drew on different stretches of Oasis’s catalogue without feeling, in her view, like a parade of disconnected greatest hits. Her praise was not unqualified. She also remarked on the band’s deliberately plodding rock feel, while praising Noel’s guitar sound and Liam’s singing. Those details matter because “canonical” here does not mean flawless or historically definitive; it captures the impression this particular performance made on one reviewer.
Who was in the 2025 lineup?
Hé names Liam and Noel Gallagher, Mike Moore, Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and Joey Waronker. Moore was filling in for Bonehead, who was undergoing prostate cancer treatment at the time of the October 2025 show. That is historical context reported around this performance, not an update on Bonehead’s current health.

- REURE CAN PROTECT YOU ANYWHERE - The compact case protects your earplugs. You can attach it on your key chain, jeans, or backpack and it can follow you anywhere. Ideal for concerts, noise sensitivity, tinnitus relief, motorcycles, musicians, sports events, flying, sleeping noise cancelling, etc.

The lineup is part of what makes the review’s claim specific. Hé is describing the group on stage in Melbourne, rather than claiming that every era or configuration of Oasis has been superseded. The lineup and the band’s performance are the evidence behind her personal prediction that this version could become the one remembered most vividly.
Why did the reunion feel different from Oasis’s past?
Hé’s review frames the concert as more than a return to familiar songs. In her account, the show felt distinct from both the band’s ascent in the 1990s and its Australian appearances in 2005. The decades between those moments gave the audience time to turn the songs into personal and shared memories; hearing Liam and Noel perform together again changed the meaning of that catalogue without simply restoring the past.

The review also leaves the future open. Liam teased the possibility of a new album, but Hé treats that as uncertain rather than an announcement. Her “may they live forever” sentiment is therefore a wish about the band and the renewed possibility of its story, not evidence of a confirmed next record or a permanent reunion.
