NYT Strands #182, dated Sunday, September 1, 2024, has the theme “Serve ginger-ly?” The six answers are CRAB, MAYO, AVOCADO, CUCUMBER, SEAWEED and RICE; the spangram is CALIFORNIAROLL.
Hints for Strands #182
The theme points to ginger served alongside sushi. The spangram narrows the food connection to a California roll, making the pun in “Serve ginger-ly?” a reference to serving ginger with sushi rather than to handling something gently.
An archived hint for the puzzle is “So shellfish.” Its additional clue-token words are MARY, CALL, FULL, CLUE, LIFE, RAIN and MOVER. The archive also says the spangram starts with C and ends with L. These are hints, not theme answers. Source: Tom’s Guide/Yahoo Entertainment, August 31, 2024.

Spangram: CALIFORNIAROLL (California roll).
Why these words fit the theme
The theme words name foods associated with a California roll, while the spangram supplies the specific sushi connection. Ginger is commonly served alongside sushi; the clue relies on that pairing, which may not be immediately obvious from the pun alone.

The answer list is a puzzle theme, not a definitive recipe. One published California-roll recipe uses avocado, cucumber, crab sticks, sushi rice and nori, and serves the roll with pickled ginger. That recipe uses a bamboo rolling mat to shape the roll, but ingredients can vary. Source: BBC Good Food, California rolls recipe.
The inclusion of MAYO and CRAB prompted disagreement among players about whether mayonnaise and real crab belong in a California roll. Some commenters distinguish crab sticks or imitation crab from crab meat; those reactions do not establish a universal ingredient standard. Source: archived player discussion.
