Its theme clue is “What a stud!” If you want a nudge before the solution, think of jewelry locations.
How to play NYT Strands
Strands is a word-search puzzle played on a six-by-eight letter grid. Connect letters vertically, horizontally, or diagonally to trace words, changing direction as needed. Theme words turn blue; the spangram turns yellow and captures the connection among the theme words.
To reveal a hint, find three non-theme words of at least four letters. The hint highlights one theme word. Themes can use several kinds of wordplay, including missing words in phrases, synonyms, and homophones, so the clue may initially suggest more than one interpretation.
Spangram for September 16
PIERCING is the spangram. It points to the shared idea: the other answers are body locations associated with piercings, not types of jewelry.
