How Strands works

Strands is a daily word-search puzzle available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app. The board has six rows and eight columns. Each puzzle supplies a theme clue, and the goal is to find the theme words and the spangram.

  • Letters connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and a word can change direction.
  • Each letter is used once across the theme words and spangram.
  • Theme words highlight blue; the spangram highlights yellow.
  • Three valid non-theme words of four or more letters unlock a hint that reveals the letters of one theme word.
