How the hint system works

The Word Finder’s guide says that every three non-theme words earn a hint revealing letters in a theme answer. That guide describes Strands as an eight-by-six letter grid: trace letters to form theme words, while the spangram describes the theme and spans opposite edges. These mechanics are described by the guide, not confirmed here against official NYT instructions.
