Progressive hints for Strands #157
Start with the theme phrase, then use the clues in order if you want a little more help before seeing the solution.
- Theme: “Oh, oh, oh!”
- Extra nudge: Semi-soundalikes.
- Words that unlock in-game hints: MIST, SLATE, HEAT, TRAY, TONIC, and CHEAT.
- Spangram clue: “Sounds just so.”
- Spangram route: It starts at the bottom of the grid in the third column and ends at the top of the third column.
How the theme works
The answers are connected by pronunciation, not by one shared spelling. Each ends with a spelling associated with an “O” sound: DOUGH uses OUGH, MISTLETOE uses OE, WHOA uses OA, RAINBOW uses OW, CHATEAU uses EAU, and AVOCADO ends in O. That variety is the puzzle’s central wordplay.

Strands uses a 6-by-8 letter grid. Find words tied to the day’s theme and a spangram that expresses the connection. Letters may be linked horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and a word’s path can change direction. Finding three valid non-theme words of at least four letters unlocks a hint that highlights a theme answer. Strands is available in the NYT Games app.
