Today’s Strands theme: “Dash It!”
The puzzle’s secondary idea is “Bring ’em together.” Look for familiar expressions whose parts are conventionally connected with a dash-like punctuation mark: a hyphen. The theme also has a playful connection to expressions associated with Carrie Bradshaw, according to Parade’s guide.

Words that unlock the in-game hints

HYPHENATED
That is the 10-letter spangram. It captures the puzzle’s central idea and stretches across the grid, touching both sides around the fifth row. In Strands, the spangram is the special theme word that connects opposite sides of the board.

- Spangram: HYPHENATED
Some puzzle archives remove punctuation and display the entries as WILLYNILLY, HOCUSPOCUS, PELLMELL, and HOITYTOITY. For this particular theme, the conventional hyphens are important, so the answer list above retains them.
What the four hyphenated answers mean
| Answer | Meaning |
|---|---|
| WILLY-NILLY | In a disorganized, unplanned, or arbitrary manner; without a clear order or choice. |
| HOCUS-POCUS | Deceptive activity, meaningless talk, or a trick intended to make something seem impressive. |
| PELL-MELL | In a confused, hurried, or disorderly way. |
| HOITY-TOITY | Pretentious, snobbish, or overly self-important. |
These definitions provide context for the expressions; they are explanatory glosses rather than quotations from The New York Times.

How NYT Strands works
NYT Strands is a word-search game in which you trace adjacent letters on the board to form words. The goal is to find the theme entries and the spangram. The spangram crosses the board from one side to the opposite side, while the remaining theme words can appear in different directions and shapes.
Non-theme words can also help: in the standard hint system, finding enough valid extra words earns an in-game hint. That makes the clue words above useful if you are stuck but still want to complete the puzzle yourself. The basic mechanics are summarized in Parade’s Strands explanation.

Was this Strands puzzle difficult?
Difficulty is subjective, and The New York Times does not appear to publish an official difficulty score for this grid. Forbes’ solving account described the puzzle as difficult and said the writer used two hints before finding the spangram. TechRadar’s coverage likewise characterized it as difficult and reported a two-hint solve. Those are individual assessments, not an objective NYT rating.
