The September 11, 2025, NYT Strands theme was “Take a break.” A softer hint is self-care. Published guides record two versions of the grid, so the answer lists below are kept separate rather than combined.

Hint for the September 11 Strands puzzle

Theme: Take a break. Forbes’ hint was “Self-care,” while Parade offered “Relax.”

Spoiler: the spangram

ME TIME (also written METIME) is the spangram. It summarizes the theme and, as described by the guides, spans at least two sides of the board.

Spoiler: reported answer lists

Guides document two answer sets for this date. Forbes says the New York Times swapped in a version of the grid with an altered layout and a few different words. The archive listing agrees with Forbes’ set, but the available accounts do not establish which version every player saw.

Forbes’ updated-grid list

  • UNPLUG
  • EXERCISE
  • JOURNAL
  • READ
  • PAINT
  • WALK
  • MEDITATE

Forbes’ guide, by Kris Holt and updated September 11, 2025, describes the grid change: Forbes’ September 11 Strands guide. The archive records the same words: StrandsSolution archive.

Parade and Try Hard Guides’ alternate list

  • REST
  • SHOWER
  • STRETCH
  • EXERCISE
  • READ
  • PAINT
  • MEDITATE

Parade published this list with the clue “Relax”: Parade’s September 11 Strands guide. Try Hard Guides also lists these words and identifies the puzzle as #557, though its introductory word-count description does not match the list: Try Hard Guides’ September 11 answers.

How Strands hints work

The guides describe Strands as a six-by-eight letter grid. Connect adjacent letters horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to form theme words. The spangram captures the theme and touches at least two sides of the board. Forbes says that finding three valid non-theme words of at least four letters unlocks a hint that highlights the letters in one theme word.
