How NYT Strands works
Strands is a themed word-search puzzle. Connect adjacent letters in any direction to form words; a letter cannot be reused within a word, and paths cannot cross themselves. Three valid non-theme words earn an in-game hint that reveals the letters of one theme entry. The spangram summarizes the theme, touches two opposite board edges, and is highlighted in yellow. The New York Times also notes that a spangram can consist of two words, even though this puzzle’s answer is shown as one continuous entry.

Solving approach for this grid
- Use the train-related theme to look for carriage types and onboard areas.
- Check the six initial pairs from the final hint against likely entries: COACH, QUIET, DINING, SLEEPER, OBSERVATION and PASSENGERTRAIN.
- Trace the long edge-to-edge route only after identifying the 14-letter spangram; its board position confirms the final answer.
