Earn an in-game hint
According to Try Hard Guides and Parade, finding three words that are not theme answers earns an in-game hint that highlights a theme word. You can also use these words to unlock hints, as listed by TechRadar: BONE, SCUM, HOOD, TREAT, CURB, TURN.
How to approach the puzzle
- Begin with the theme nudge. Think of words or expressions used when something disappointing happens.
- Use the starting letters as a filter. Look for theme answers beginning BU, UN, SU, BO, SO, or AL.
- Look for the spangram. The 11-letter answer starts with SA and reaches opposite sides of the grid.
- Use an in-game hint if needed. Finding three non-theme words can earn a hint, according to the game guides.
Strands is a themed word search: players connect letters to form words, theme answers fill the board without overlapping, and the spangram describes the theme while touching opposite sides. These mechanics are described by secondary game guides; a direct official NYT page for this dated puzzle was not available to verify the board.
