How Strands works

Strands presents a six-by-eight letter grid. Trace connected letters to form theme words; the spangram describes the theme, connects opposite sides of the board and is highlighted separately from the other theme words.

You can also find qualifying words that are not part of the theme. Three such words make an in-game hint available, which highlights letters in one of the theme words.

As Forbes explains, Strands themes can involve fill-in-the-blank phrases, steps in a process, items in a category, synonyms or homophones. Its explanation is attributed to Strands editor Tracy Bennett.
