The spangram has eight letters, not counting its space. TechRadar reports that it runs from the top edge to the bottom edge in the fourth column. The spangram describes the theme and touches two opposite sides of the board; it may contain two words, according to the NYT instructions quoted by Parade.

How Strands hints and the spangram work
Parade says players can drag or tap letters to form theme words. Found theme words remain highlighted, and every three non-theme words found earns a hint. The spangram describes the puzzle’s theme and connects two opposite sides of the board; it can be two words.
