NYT Strands game #66, dated May 8, 2024, has the theme “Can you digit?” The answers are familiar phrases and concepts that pair with the word “number.” If you want to solve it yourself, use the hints below in order and stop before the spoiler section.
Hints for Strands #66
These clues move from broad to specific. The first six words are published clue words for the in-game hint system, not theme answers.
- Theme: “Can you digit?”
- Clue words: BAND, BRAND, STEEP, STEEL, HOLE, MULE.
- Spangram clue: “Natural or imaginary?”
- Spangram path: It runs backward along row 5, starting at the right edge and ending at the left.
How the Strands hint system works
Strands is a word-search-style game: connect adjacent letters in any direction without reusing or crossing them. The spangram describes the theme and stretches between opposite sides of the board. Finding three valid words that are not theme answers earns a hint revealing one theme word.

Why the answers fit “Can you digit?”
Each theme answer forms a phrase or concept with “number”: binary number, whole number, lucky number, Bacon number, dance number, serial number, and telephone number. “Bacon number” is a measure of an actor’s degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. The theme is not asking for literal numerals; it points to words commonly associated with numbers.
