For NYT Strands game #881, dated August 1, 2026, the theme is “As if!” The hints below move from a theme nudge to letter counts, then the spangram and full answers. This is not the August 1, 2025 puzzle, which was game #516.
Theme hint for August 1, 2026
Think of adjectives for a claim that sounds unbelievable, foolish, or wildly over the top. The puzzle guide connects that idea to the theme “As if!”
Letter and length hints
There are five theme words, plus the spangram. If you want a firmer nudge without seeing the answers, use these starting letters and lengths:
- A — 6 letters
- L — 9 letters
- L — 9 letters
- P — 12 letters
- S — 5 letters
- The spangram begins with G.
To earn a hint in Strands, the guide says to find three valid words that are not theme answers; the hint highlights the letters of one unfound theme word without spelling it out. Examples of possible non-theme words vary by guide and are not an exhaustive list: one lists CORER, HERALDS, ICER, GRICER, TOPER, and SAGE; another lists GAPE, HUGE, CRIER, DRUG, SURE, and STOP.

Why the year matters
August 1, 2025 was a different Strands puzzle: game #516, themed “Slithering away,” with SERPENT as its spangram. Its answers included VIPER, ANACONDA, RATTLER, COBRA, ADDER, PYTHON, and MAMBA. Do not mix that answer set with the August 1, 2026 grid.
