The New York Times description quoted by Forbes says themes can take forms such as fill-in-the-blank phrases, steps in a process, items in a category, synonyms, or homophones. Forbes also reports that editor Tracy Bennett intended to vary the puzzle’s difficulty occasionally; those are general comments about the game, not a rating of this particular puzzle.
