Words that unlock in-game hints
TechRadar lists these non-theme words as hint-unlocking finds: APPLE, MAPLE, RACE, HEAR, RATTY and SOAR. They are not answers to the theme. Try Hard Guides describes the hint mechanic this way: each three qualifying words of at least four letters can earn a hint that reveals a theme word.

Forbes describes the board as a six-by-eight letter grid. Theme words are marked blue, while the spangram connects the theme and touches opposite sides of the board. The New York Times’ general description of its themes, as quoted by Forbes, notes that they can be fill-in-the-blank phrases, steps in a process, items in a category, synonyms or homophones.
