Hint for the September 18 Pips puzzle
On Hard, begin with the blue equality region: its five pips must all show the same value. Forbes’ walkthrough reasons that the matching value is 2. From there, use the two regions that each require a total of 10 to narrow the domino choices, checking both halves of every placement because a domino can cross between regions.
What is known about the answers
NYT Pips asks you to place every supplied domino on a grid while satisfying the conditions in its marked regions. The September 18 puzzle has Easy, Medium, and Hard boards. Forbes’ guide provides a written walkthrough for Hard; Yahoo Tech’s indexed text gives selected Easy and Medium placements. The available text does not verify a complete placement-by-placement answer key for all three official boards, so the partial placements below should not be mistaken for full solutions.
Easy: reported placements
Yahoo Tech’s partial text describes a vertical 0–6 domino and a horizontal 0–0 domino in the region that totals 6. It also names placements for a zero-total region and an equal-3 region, but the retrieved text does not provide a complete, independently verified board transcription.

Medium: reported placements
Yahoo Tech’s indexed text identifies a horizontal 0–5 domino and a vertical 0–3 domino in a not-equal region. It also lists several dominoes in the region totaling 20. These details are partial; they are not enough to reconstruct or confirm every placement on the official Medium board.
Hard: a documented deduction
Erik Kain’s Forbes walkthrough works through the Hard board. It says the blue equality region contains five pips that must match, and infers that the value must be 2. The walkthrough then uses the two total-10 regions to constrain placements and proceeds through the other regions. How to read the region clues
- = means the pip values in the region must all be equal.
- ≠ means the values must differ from one another.
- > and < indicate a comparison condition; apply the rule to the tile or tiles covered by that clue.
- A number means the relevant pips must add up to that total.
- Unmarked cells have no additional regional condition.
Every domino must be used, and its two halves may affect different regions. A promising placement therefore has to work on both sides, not just satisfy the clue beside one half. Forbes explains these rules and illustrates their use in its Hard-board walkthrough.

EnergyPips lists a September 18, 2025 archive entry as Puzzle #32, but identifies its boards as independently generated recreations rather than official NYT boards. Its reported sizes—8 squares and 4 dominoes for Easy, 14 squares and 7 dominoes for Medium, and 20 squares and 10 dominoes for Hard—describe that archive’s versions only. They should not be used as official NYT board specifications or as proof of an official answer.
