This guide is for the Sunday, October 26, 2025 NYT Pips puzzle—not October 26, 2026, which is still in the future. Spoilers follow: start with the rules and hints, then open the answer lists for Easy, Medium, and Hard.

How to read these Pips hints

Pips is a domino-based logic puzzle. Place dominoes to fill the board while meeting the arithmetic condition in each colored region. The conditions can require an exact pip total, equal values, distinct values, or a total above or below a stated number. A domino can cross a region boundary, so only one half may count toward a particular region. Tiles that touch do not have to match.

An uncolored area has no special arithmetic condition. The answer guide below identifies domino pairs and whether they are vertical or horizontal; it does not provide coordinates for every tile, so it is not a complete board-by-board placement walkthrough.

Progressive hints by difficulty

Easy

  • Greater Than (7): The listed dominoes are 2–5 and 6–6, both vertical.
  • Number (17): The listed dominoes are 2–5, 6–6, and 6–1, all vertical.
  • Equal (5): Look for a vertical 5–5 domino.

Medium

  • The Not Equal regions use 4–0, 4–5, and 2–1 vertically, and 2–4 and 6–4 horizontally.
  • The exact-total clues are Number (0): 4–0 and 0–2 vertically; Number (1): 2–1 vertically; Number (2): 0–2 vertically; Number (3): 3–1 horizontally; Number (10): 0–5 and 5–6 horizontally; and Number (22): 5–5, 5–6, and 6–4 horizontally.
  • The Equal (1) region uses 3–1, 1–1, and 1–4 horizontally. Equal (0) uses 0–0 and 0–5 horizontally.

Hard

  • The Equal (4) region uses 4–2 vertically and 4–4 horizontally. Equal (5) uses 1–5 vertically and 5–3 horizontally.
  • The red Number (5) region uses 4–2 vertically, 1–5 vertically, 1–1 horizontally, and 1–3 vertically. The green Number (5) region uses 5–3 horizontally and 0–2 vertically.
  • For the other exact totals, Number (1) uses 1–1 and 0–4 horizontally; Number (3) uses 0–2 vertically and 5–3 horizontally.

What the region clues mean

  • Number: The pips counted in that region must add up to the displayed number.
  • Equal: The domino halves in the region must have matching values.
  • Not Equal: The values in the region must be distinct.
  • Greater Than / Less Than: The region’s pip total must be above or below the displayed number, respectively.

These rules apply to the portions of dominoes inside a region; a tile may have one half on either side of a boundary.
