What you need to know about this puzzle
PuzzleHints identifies the September 5, 2026 Hard board as puzzle #384 and credits Ian Livengood as its setter. The board uses 12 dominoes across 24 squares and 15 regions. How NYT Pips works
Pips is a digital domino-placement puzzle. Place every tile on the board so each colored region satisfies its displayed condition. Depending on the region, that can mean reaching an exact pip total, matching values, using all different values, staying above or below a total, or treating the space as free. Start with the forced 3
The most constrained opening is the single square at row 4, column 1. Its region must total exactly 3, so it can only take a domino half marked 3. PuzzleHints lists four possible tile halves with a 3 as candidates for this opening; use the surrounding board and the other region requirements to determine which one fits.

Watch the two zero regions
Technobezz points to the two navy regions requiring zero pips as a trap in this Hard board. A nonzero half placed there can force a late reshuffle. This is a walkthrough observation, not a separate rule: the region condition itself is what requires the total to be zero.

The following is the archived placement sequence from PuzzleHints. Coordinates use rows and columns numbered from the source’s board: “column N, rows X–Y” means a vertical domino; “row N, columns X–Y” means a horizontal domino. The tile notation gives its two ends in the listed order.
