For October 23, 2025, NYT Pips puzzle #67, the hard board can be approached by first treating each clue literally, then using the tight high-total regions to restrict which domino halves can fit. The published material available for this date supports a deduction route, but not a verified, coordinate-by-coordinate official answer layout; the steps below are solver reasoning, not a claim to reproduce the NYT answer image.
What are the NYT Pips hard hints for October 23?
The date-specific archive identifies October 23, 2025 as puzzle #67. Its hard-board description says the board has 20 squares, 10 dominoes, and seven regions. It reports three exact-sum regions, three less-than regions, and one all-different region. The page’s displayed summaries do not reconcile every clue badge with the contemporaneous discussion, so the reasoning below relies on the constraints explicitly described by solvers rather than presenting a complete transcription of every region clue. EnergyPips’ October 23, 2025 puzzle page is a third-party archive, not an NYT answer key.
Before placing tiles, remember that a domino can straddle two regions. Each half is evaluated under the rule for the square it occupies, so the two pips on one tile do not necessarily contribute to the same region. Tom’s Guide’s Pips rules explanation and the date-specific archive describe this region-by-region mechanic.
Read “<7” as a strict upper limit
The less-than clue means the region’s total must be below seven; it does not mean the region must total seven. That distinction matters near the region with a total of 26: a placement that helps reach the large sum can still violate the neighboring less-than-seven condition. A contemporaneous solver discussion records this exact misreading as a source of confusion. Read the October 23 community discussion.

How to reason through the hard board
Use the following as a supported deduction outline, not as a verified answer diagram. The discussion describes one valid reasoning route and notes that placements can be made in a different order.
- Constrain the largest totals first. The community explanation says a four-square region totaling 24 requires four sixes. The region totaling 26 then uses the remaining six together with four fives. This sharply limits which halves can go into those regions.
- Use the doubles and remaining values. Apply the remaining-value constraints to the 3–3, 0–0, and 6–6 dominoes. The thread says their placements can be deduced from the larger equal-value region and the surrounding constraints; avoid placing a double solely because it looks locally convenient.
- Connect the larger equal region to its neighbors. The discussion next narrows the 2–3 and 3–6 tiles using the remaining values and the absence of a 3–5 tile. These placements link the larger equal-value area to adjacent constrained regions.
- Protect the less-than-seven region at the 26-total border. Resolve the 5 and 6 halves at this boundary with both rules in view: satisfy the high total while keeping the neighboring region strictly below seven. The community route identifies a 5–5 placement as a consequence of those combined constraints.
- Finish with the remaining named tiles. Place 5–2, 6–2, 5–1, 6–4, and 2–0 according to the constraints described in the thread, then fill the remaining equal-value and neighboring cells. Check every region after each placement rather than treating a whole domino as belonging to one region.
What does the less-than sign mean in Pips?
It means the sum of the pips in that marked region must be less than the displayed number. For a “<7” region, totals from zero through six satisfy the clue; seven does not. If a domino crosses into another region, only the half inside the “<7” region counts toward that region’s total.

What the available solution does—and does not—establish
The date-specific archive provides a reveal control and says its displayed solutions are generator-built, but the accessible text does not expose a full hard-board placement that can be checked square by square. The community discussion supports the deductions above, but it is solver commentary, not an official NYT answer key. Accordingly, this guide does not assign coordinates or label the sequence as the official solution.
Pips is a domino placement game: use every supplied domino exactly once, with each half occupying one square, while meeting the condition attached to each marked region. The game includes equality, all-different, exact-sum, and greater-than or less-than conditions. For the game’s origin and design context, The New York Times’ Pips launch announcement quotes Games head Jonathan Knight: “Dominoes evoke nostalgia for many people, and we leaned into that comfort while adding our signature NYT Games human-crafted twist.”
