  1. 1A — CLAW: Crab’s grabber
  2. 5A — PEACH: “Giant” fruit in a Roald Dahl novel
  3. 6A — GIGA: Prefix similar to mega-

  5. 8A — FOX: “Fantastic” animal in a Roald Dahl novel

Down

  1. 1D — HARP: Large stringed instrument

Clue connections and solving help

The two Roald Dahl references point to James and the Giant Peach for PEACH and Fantastic Mr Fox for FOX. The remaining clues resolve through familiar meanings and phrases: a claw grabs, giga- is a metric prefix, agile means nimble, a harp is a stringed instrument, latex can be used for balloons, and “just as the doctor ordered” completes the phrase.

When the January 19 Mini is available

According to the NYT Help Center, weekday and Saturday Minis become available at 10 p.m. Eastern the previous day; Sunday Minis appear at 6 p.m. Eastern on Saturday. The Help Center says subscribers with qualifying Games access can play in the Games app, on the web at nytimes.com/crosswords, or in the News app, and can access past Minis through the archive. Access terms and availability may change.
