There is no single set of “NYT Crossword answers for December 31”: the date occurs every year, and the year needed to identify the puzzle is missing. The actual Across and Down answers cannot be verified without it. Use the official archive to select the matching year and puzzle before checking answers.
Why the year matters
The New York Times publishes a daily crossword, so December 31 refers to a different puzzle in different years. The NYT archive requires you to choose both a month and a year before selecting an archived puzzle. Without the intended year and its matching grid, publishing an answer list risks giving you answers for the wrong date.
The NYT Help Center describes the crossword as “a daily word puzzle that invites you to fill the grid with intersecting words and phrases by solving clues that run Across and Down.”
How to find the December 31 puzzle
- Open the NYT Crossword or use the NYT Games app or News app.
- Open the puzzle archive, choose the relevant month and year, then select December 31.
- Confirm the displayed date and grid before checking any answers.
The NYT Help Center says its archive extends back over ten years. Games and All Access subscribers have archive access; other readers may have limited access. Check the current access details with the NYT Crossword Help Center.

Ways to play and check a puzzle
| Format | Where to access it | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Digital | NYTimes.com, the NYT Games app, or the News app | Interactive tools can check or reveal a square, an answer, or the entire grid. The NYT says using Check or Reveal resets a Crossword streak. |
| The newspaper’s print edition, through home delivery or a newsstand | Monday through Saturday, the crossword appears in Arts; on Sunday, it appears in the Sunday Magazine. |
For help solving rather than revealing answers, the NYT also points readers to its How to Solve guide and Wordplay column. Puzzle difficulty generally increases from Monday through Saturday; the Sunday puzzle is larger and described by the NYT as roughly midweek in difficulty.
When the puzzle becomes available
The NYT Help Center lists Tuesday–Saturday puzzles as available at 10 p.m. EST the previous day, and Sunday and Monday puzzles at 6 p.m. EST the previous day. These are general release times, not a verified release time for a particular December 31 puzzle; schedules can change.

An independent crossword reference site says it imports answers as puzzles are released and maintains year-and-month archives, but it is not affiliated with the NYT. Treat it as a secondary checking option only after you have identified the correct year and date.
An older public clue-answer dataset covers October 1996 through December 31, 2012, but warns of gaps, says 2006 is missing, and does not preserve full dates or Across/Down labels in its intended structure. It cannot reliably establish the answers to a specific December 31 puzzle.

Until the year is known and the corresponding grid is confirmed, the Across and Down answers remain unverified.
