Connections #510 answers
Spoilers follow. The puzzle’s four groups are below, from the easiest yellow category to the trickiest purple category.
Yellow: Seen in a kitchen
COUNTER, FRIDGE, RANGE, SINK
- A counter is a kitchen work surface.
- A fridge is a refrigerator.
- A range is a cooking appliance, usually combining burners or heating elements with an oven.
- A sink is a standard kitchen fixture.
Green: Group of advisors
BOARD, CABINET, COUNCIL, PANEL
Each word can describe a group of people brought together to advise, deliberate, govern or make recommendations. A board, cabinet, council and panel are collective bodies—not individual advisers.
Blue: Core exercises
BOAT, CRUNCH, MOUNTAIN CLIMBER, PLANK
- Boat refers to the boat exercise or boat pose.
- A crunch is a familiar abdominal exercise.
- Mountain climber is a movement often included in core and conditioning workouts.
- A plank trains the trunk while the body is held in a braced position.
BOAT is the least obvious entry in this group because it can refer to an exercise or pose rather than an everyday object in a fitness context.
Purple: Kinds of earrings
CHANDELIER, DROP, HOOP, STUD
- Chandelier earrings have multiple hanging elements.
- Drop earrings hang below the earlobe.
- Hoop earrings form a loop.
- Stud earrings sit close to the ear.
CHANDELIER is the trap here: it may initially look like another hanging object, but “chandelier” is also an established earring style.

Why this puzzle can be tricky
Several words have plausible alternate meanings. BOARD and CABINET can suggest furniture or kitchen items, making them tempting additions to the yellow group. Once the advisory meaning becomes clear, however, they fit naturally with COUNCIL and PANEL.
The exercise group also contains a vocabulary mismatch. CRUNCH and PLANK immediately sound like workouts, while BOAT is recognizable only when you think of the boat exercise or pose. The puzzle is resolved when all 16 words form four complete groups of four with no leftovers.
How difficult was Connections #510?
One secondary guide rated this puzzle around 3 out of 5 for difficulty, describing it as moderate. That is an external assessment, not an official difficulty rating from The New York Times. The yellow kitchen group is fairly accessible, while the advisory-group category and the earring category rely on recognizing less literal meanings.
What is NYT Connections?
Connections gives players 16 words and asks them to divide the grid into four groups of four words that share a connection. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the easiest, followed by green and blue, while purple is usually the most challenging. The game deliberately includes overlapping meanings and misleading combinations.
