Why these words fit
Yellow: LEADER OF A TEAM
Coach, manager and skipper are familiar titles for people leading a team. “Gaffer” is another word for a coach or manager, especially in football usage.
Green: NFL DRAFT NO. 1 PICKS
Carr, Couch, Luck and Manning are surnames of quarterbacks selected first overall in the NFL Draft. The category is about the draft position, not a shared team or season.

Blue: FORMER MLB TEAM NAMES
Browns, Expos, Pilots and Senators are names of former Major League Baseball franchises. In this group, “Browns” is a team name rather than a reference to a color or a person.
Purple: WHAT “C” MIGHT MEAN
In sports, C can indicate captain, catcher or center; Celtics is a team name beginning with the letter. The category plays on different sports-related uses of the same letter.

How Connections: Sports Edition works
The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as a game in which “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” It assigns each group a color: yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest. The daily game is released at midnight in the player’s timezone. See the official Connections help page for the rules and access information.
The Times identifies Sports Edition as the sports version of Connections, brought to solvers by The Athletic, and lists access through NYT Games, The Athletic, The Athletic App and the NYT News App. Its help page says Sports Edition does not have an archive, so it does not establish that this October 2025 board can be replayed officially.
