NYT Connections: Sports Edition puzzle #224 is the edition dated Monday, May 5, 2025. The hints below offer progressively clearer nudges; the full four groups and their words appear after the spoiler break.

Hints for Connections: Sports Edition #224

The puzzle uses 16 words arranged into four groups of four. The game resets at 12 a.m. EST, and its instruction on the NYT site is to “group sports terms that share a common thread.”

Try these category nudges in order, stopping when you have enough to solve a group:

  1. Yellow: Related to baseball in some way.
  2. Green: Things you might hear at a gym.
  3. Blue: Certain players.
  4. Purple: They all share the same first word.

How to approach the groups

Read each word for more than one possible sports meaning. Familiar abbreviations point toward baseball teams, while the gym-related terms make a set of weightlifting vocabulary. The player surnames form another group. For the remaining set, attach the same word to the beginning of each item to reveal a phrase.
