These are the clues and answers for the New York Times Connections puzzle released Wednesday, August 20, 2025: game #801. Read the four spoiler-light hints first, then open the solution section when you are ready. Connections releases a new puzzle at midnight in each player’s timezone, so the date can differ by location.

Hints for Connections #801

Each group contains four tiles. The clues below point toward each category without listing its tiles.

  • Yellow: Monochrome items.
  • Green: Two of a kind.
  • Blue: Staring at these will make you dizzy.
  • Purple: Bend at the end.

For a more descriptive nudge: think of animals, patterns, and classic television or photography styles; paired straight bars; things that spin upright; and straight objects with a hooked or curved tip.

How Connections works

The New York Times Help Center describes the game this way: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” The groups are marked yellow, green, blue, and purple, from easiest to trickiest. Some words can plausibly fit more than one theme, so a tempting overlap may be a decoy rather than the intended set.

The daily puzzle is free to play through NYTimes.com and the Games app, among other listed surfaces. The Times says its archive goes back to June 12, 2023, and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. See the NYT Connections Help Center page for current access details.
