These are the answers to NYT Connections #331, the puzzle published on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. Because May 7 falls on different weekdays in different years, this page is specifically for the 2024 puzzle—not the separate May 7 editions from 2025 or 2026.

Try the progressive hints first if you are still solving. The complete word groups appear below the spoiler warning.

Hints for NYT Connections #331

Connections asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are commonly displayed by difficulty color: yellow is generally the most accessible, while purple is usually the trickiest. These hints are concise explanations of the answer groups, not verbatim NYT editorial wording.

  1. Yellow: Think of different kinds of bread or rolls commonly used for deli sandwiches.
  2. Green: Look for informal words that mean or refer to the mouth.
  3. Blue: These words describe physical ways of keeping time with a song or beat.
  4. Purple: Each answer can complete the phrase “round of ___.”

Words in the May 7, 2024 Connections puzzle

The 16 entries were:

BUN, HERO, ROLL, WRAP, CHOPS, KISSER, TRAP, YAP, BOB, CLAP, SNAP, TAP, APPLAUSE, DRINKS, FUNDING, GOLF

Spoiler warning: complete answers below

The four categories and all 16 answers are revealed below.

Yellow: Deli bread options

  • BUN
  • HERO
  • ROLL
  • WRAP

These are bread or bread-like options that can be used for deli sandwiches. A hero is a type of submarine-style sandwich as well as the name of the bread or sandwich format, while a bun, roll, and wrap are familiar serving choices for sandwich fillings.

Green: Slang for mouth

  • CHOPS
  • KISSER
  • TRAP
  • YAP

All four words can be used informally in reference to the mouth. “Kisser” is a slang term for the mouth or face, “trap” can mean someone’s mouth, and “yap” can refer to a person’s mouth—especially in expressions about talking. “Chops” is another informal term for the mouth.

Blue: Keep rhythm with music

  • BOB
  • CLAP
  • SNAP
  • TAP

You can bob your head or body, clap your hands, snap your fingers, or tap your foot to keep time with music. These words are deliberately tempting because clap, snap, and tap can also describe sounds or actions outside a musical context.

Purple: Round of ___

  • APPLAUSE
  • DRINKS
  • FUNDING
  • GOLF

Each word completes a familiar phrase:

  • Round of applause
  • Round of drinks
  • Round of funding
  • Round of golf

This group is likely to be the hardest because “round” has several unrelated meanings. It can describe applause or drinks shared by a group, a stage in raising investment, or a complete circuit of a golf course.

How to avoid the traps in this puzzle

The board includes several words that look as though they could belong together based on sound or action. CLAP, SNAP, and TAP form part of the rhythm group, but they should be considered alongside BOB, not grouped merely as short words describing noises. Likewise, HERO belongs with sandwich formats rather than with a group based on people or bravery.

The final group becomes clearer when you test the exact phrase “round of.” Once APPLAUSE, DRINKS, FUNDING, and GOLF are recognized as phrase completions, the remaining words resolve into the bread and mouth categories.
