Spoiler warning: Hints appear before the complete solution. NYT Connections #786 is the puzzle for Tuesday, August 5, 2025, and the board’s biggest traps are the PIPE/TUBE distinction and the late-emerging “___ CODE” group.

The four categories are subterranean transit, cooking methods, snowman decorations, and words that can precede “code.”

The 16 words in Connections #786

Before checking the hints, try sorting these words into four groups of four:

DRESS, SCARF, SUBWAY, GRATE, PIPE, TUBE, CUBE, ZIP, HEALTH, CARROT, UNDERGROUND, SECRET, METRO, MINCE, COAL, SLICE

Hints for the August 5 Connections puzzle

These clues become progressively more specific, but they do not give away every answer immediately:

  • Yellow: Think of names for underground or urban rail systems.
  • Green: These are cooking actions that reduce food into smaller pieces.
  • Blue: Think of traditional parts or accessories used to decorate a snowman.
  • Purple: Each word can come before “code.”

One-word clues

If you need a smaller nudge, these examples point toward one member of each group:

  • Yellow: METRO
  • Green: GRATE
  • Blue: CARROT
  • Purple: ZIP

NYT Connections #786 answers for Tuesday, August 5, 2025

Here are the complete groups. The categories are listed from the generally easiest color group to the most difficult.

Yellow: SUBTERRANEAN TRANSIT

METRO, SUBWAY, TUBE, UNDERGROUND

All four can refer to an urban rail system. “Metro” and “subway” are broad terms used in different cities, while “Tube” is especially associated with London’s Underground. “Underground” can also describe or name a subway network.

Green: MAKE INTO SMALLER PIECES WHILE COOKING

CUBE, GRATE, MINCE, SLICE

These words describe food-preparation methods. You can cube vegetables, grate cheese, mince meat or herbs, and slice ingredients into thinner pieces. The group is phrased as an action rather than as a conventional noun category, which helps separate it from the transit terms.

Blue: USED TO DECORATE A SNOWMAN

CARROT, COAL, PIPE, SCARF

A carrot can become a snowman’s nose, coal can be used for eyes or buttons, a pipe is a familiar traditional accessory, and a scarf completes the recognizable winter figure. Because this was a summer puzzle, the seasonal association is easy to overlook.

Purple: ___ CODE

DRESS, HEALTH, SECRET, ZIP

Add “code” after each word to make the phrases dress code, health code, secret code, and ZIP code. This is the wordplay-heavy group: the individual words do not obviously belong together until the shared ending appears.

Why this puzzle can be tricky

The main trap is PIPE. It may seem to belong with subway infrastructure because pipes are often underground, but here it is the snowman accessory. The intended transit word is TUBE.

There is also a possible distraction in UNDERGROUND, which can describe many things beneath a city rather than only a rail network. Once METRO, SUBWAY, TUBE, and UNDERGROUND are recognized as transit terms, the remaining words become easier to sort.

The final purple group is usually the last to emerge because DRESS, HEALTH, SECRET, and ZIP have unrelated meanings on their own. Looking for a common word that follows each entry reveals the pattern.

How Connections works

The daily Connections board contains 16 words. The goal is to divide them into four groups of four, with every group sharing a hidden connection. The puzzle uses four difficulty colors:

  • Yellow: generally the most straightforward group
  • Green: moderately challenging
  • Blue: more lateral or specialized
  • Purple: usually the most wordplay-oriented

Words are deliberately chosen to fit more than one apparent pattern. That is why a word such as PIPE can look plausible in the wrong group. A new puzzle is released daily at midnight in the player’s local time zone, so the date shown can vary briefly depending on where you are and when you check.

If you enjoy the daily game and want more puzzles away from a screen, the Connections puzzle book is a natural companion. The publisher describes it as a book-format collection of the category-matching game with a lay-flat design for writing or marking up puzzles. It contains additional Connections puzzles rather than a physical reproduction of this specific August 5 board.

A broader option is Puzzle Mania!: Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee, Minis and More!, a New York Times Games puzzle collection that combines Connections-style material with several other games.
