Spoilers: the four categories and answers
The following groups are reported by TechRadar and Parade in their guides to game #688.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | COOKING CONCOCTIONS | BATTER, DOUGH, MIXTURE, PASTE |
| Green | SEEN ON A TABLE AT A DINNER PARTY | CANDLESTICK, PITCHER, PLACEMAT, PLATE |
| Blue | THINGS TO CLIMB | LADDER, MOUNTAIN, ROPE, TREE |
| Purple | WHAT “DIAMOND” CAN REFER TO | GEMSTONE, INFIELD, RHOMBUS, SUIT |
Why the purple group is tricky
“Diamond” points to four different things here: a gemstone, the shape of a baseball infield, a rhombus, and the diamond suit in a deck of cards. INFIELD and RHOMBUS connect through the diamond shape; SUIT refers to the card suit, not clothing.

How NYT Connections works
The game presents 16 words; the goal is to sort them into four groups of four that share a theme. Each group has a color, with yellow generally the easiest and purple the trickiest. Words can seem to fit more than one category, which is part of the challenge. The New York Times Help Center says editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.
The NYT Help Center says the daily game is released at midnight in each player’s timezone and that Connections is free to play without registering or signing in. Its archive covers puzzles from June 12, 2023 onward and is available to All Access and Games subscribers; access terms can change.
