The sixteen words were DOUBLE, HELIX, SNAIL, KING, CONCH, QUEEN, TWIN, ROOK, ELECTRONIC, JUNK, ACE, RINGER, JACK, LOBE, CLONE, and CHAIN. TechRadar and Parade independently reported the following matching solution:

Yellow: Playing cards

ACE, JACK, KING, QUEEN. Each is a familiar card rank.

Green: Doppelgänger

CLONE, DOUBLE, RINGER, TWIN. Each can describe someone or something that closely resembles another.

Blue: Ear-piercing sites

CONCH, HELIX, LOBE, ROOK. These are terms for ear locations used to describe piercing placements.

Purple: ____ mail

CHAIN, ELECTRONIC, JUNK, SNAIL. Each word completes a familiar kind of mail.

A tempting false path

SNAIL, HELIX, CONCH, and LOBE may suggest curled or spiral shapes. In the reported solution, however, HELIX, CONCH, and LOBE belong with ROOK as ear-piercing sites, while SNAIL completes “snail mail.”

How to use the clues

Connections asks players to sort sixteen words into four groups of four based on a shared link. If you are solving along, stop before the spoiler section and try the two hint ladders first. The categories are conventionally color-coded from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the hardest; TechRadar’s guide says a game allows up to four mistakes and can be played through NYT Games on desktop or mobile.
