How Connections works
Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four based on shared themes. The New York Times says the groups are marked yellow, green, blue and purple, from easiest to trickiest, and that words can plausibly fit more than one category even though each puzzle has one solution. Its curated words and categories use the Oxford Dictionary. NYT Help Center: Connections

When and where to play
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The NYT Help Center lists the NYT Games app, nytimes.com/games/connections, nytimes.com/theathletic and the News app as places to play. It says registration is not required, though signing in to a NYT account can preserve progress across devices. NYT Help Center: Connections
Readers with All Access or Games subscriptions can use the NYT Connections archive, which reaches back to June 12, 2023. Archive plays count toward Connections statistics but do not add to current or maximum streaks. Subscription and access terms can change, so check the Help Center for current details.
