Spoilers ahead: The NYT Connections answers for Friday, November 14, 2025, are split into EVALUATE, RADIO TUNING OPTIONS, ACTION FILM SUBGENRES, and CLASSIC ’90S ACTION FILMS.
The puzzle is generally identified as Connections #887. A few archive pages list a different number for the same date, so the date is the safest way to identify this board. The sixteen tiles were GRADE, CHANNEL, STATION, SPEED, HARD BOILED, FREQUENCY, RATE, JUDGE, BAND, HEAT, ARMAGEDDON, BUDDY, SUPERHERO, MARTIAL ARTS, REVIEW, and DISASTER.

- One group consists of words meaning to assess or score something.
- One group contains radio-related tuning terms.
- One group consists of types of action films.
- The final group contains four well-known action-film titles from the 1990s.
Several tiles are designed to create false leads. RATE can suggest a radio setting because of “bit rate” or “frequency rate,” while SPEED may seem to belong with evaluation words such as “grade.” The movie groups also overlap conceptually: “buddy,” “disaster,” “martial arts,” and “superhero” describe action subgenres, whereas the other four movie-related tiles are titles.

The yellow group is GRADE, JUDGE, RATE, and REVIEW. Each word can mean to assess, score, examine, or form an opinion about something.
- You grade an exam or assignment.
- You judge a performance or competition.
- You rate a product, service, or experience.
- You review work, media, or an event.
Green group: RADIO TUNING OPTIONS
The green group is BAND, CHANNEL, FREQUENCY, and STATION. These are all terms associated with selecting or tuning radio transmissions.

- A radio band is a range of frequencies used for transmission.
- A channel is a designated path or selection for a transmission.
- Frequency identifies the rate at which a radio signal oscillates and is commonly used to tune a broadcast.
- A radio station is the broadcaster or service being received.
This is one of the board’s main traps. RATE and FREQUENCY can both sound quantitative, and CHANNEL and BAND can have unrelated meanings in other contexts. Once the radio connection is recognized, the four words separate cleanly from the evaluation group.
Blue group: ACTION FILM SUBGENRES
The blue group is BUDDY, DISASTER, MARTIAL ARTS, and SUPERHERO. Each word can complete or describe a recognizable type of action movie: buddy action, disaster action, martial-arts action, and superhero action.
The wording is intentionally broad. These are not four specific films, but labels for different kinds of action cinema. That distinction helps separate them from the purple group, where every tile is a film title.
Rank #3
Purple group: CLASSIC ’90S ACTION FILMS
The purple group is ARMAGEDDON, HARD BOILED, HEAT, and SPEED. The answer key and contemporary guides identify these as classic action films from the 1990s. The four titles are:
- Armageddon (1998)
- Hard Boiled (1992)
- Heat (1995)
- Speed (1994)
HARD BOILED is the trickiest tile. In ordinary usage, “hard-boiled” can describe a tough crime-fiction style or a type of egg. Here, it refers to Hard Boiled, John Woo’s Hong Kong action film, not to a general description of the other movies.

If this group sent you looking for the film itself, an optional Hard Boiled DVD or Blu-ray is a direct way to explore one of the puzzle’s answers. Availability, format, region, price, and retailer eligibility can vary, so check the current listing before buying; viewing the movie is not necessary to solve the puzzle.
Why this board can be difficult
The puzzle uses several kinds of overlap:
- Evaluation words versus technical terms: RATE looks close to radio vocabulary, but it belongs with GRADE, JUDGE, and REVIEW.
- General movie categories versus movie titles: BUDDY, DISASTER, MARTIAL ARTS, and SUPERHERO describe subgenres, while ARMAGEDDON, HARD BOILED, HEAT, and SPEED are names of films.
- Ambiguous everyday language: BAND, CHANNEL, STATION, and FREQUENCY have meanings outside radio, so the category may not appear immediately.
- The title-like phrase: HARD BOILED does not look as obviously like a movie title as the other three purple tiles, making it the likely final connection for many solvers.
