ORNAMENTAL BORDER: FRILL, FRINGE, RUFFLE, TRIM

Why the words fit

  • Stove-top items: A griddle, kettle, pan and pot are all cookware associated with a stove.
  • Ornamental borders: Frill, fringe, ruffle and trim can each describe a decorative edge or fabric detail.
  • Deposit with “down”: “Lay down,” “place down,” “put down” and “set down” all use the same second word to mean depositing or positioning something.
  • Plural-letter sounds: GEEZ sounds like Gs, SEIZE like Cs, TEASE like Ts and WISE like Ys.

How NYT Connections works

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four. Each puzzle has one solution, but words can seem to fit more than one category; the New York Times Help Center describes that overlap as part of the game’s intended challenge. Editors curate categories using the Oxford Dictionary. Each group is assigned a color: yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest.
