This guide covers the archived NYT Connections puzzle from Friday, March 6, 2026—not the current day’s board. Three dated guides identify it as game #999; one archive lists a conflicting number, so the date and corroborated tiles are the reliable identifiers.

How the March 6, 2026 board works

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The puzzle is available through NYT Games on desktop and mobile, as described by TechRadar.

If you want to preserve the solve, stop after each hint level below. The complete word list and answers follow the spoiler warning.

Hints for today’s archived puzzle

Broad clues

  • Don’t be a deadbeat.
  • It hides things.
  • A symbol used on social media.
  • Keep it together.

What each clue points toward

  1. A person who takes from others without contributing.
  2. A covering that conceals something.
  3. Different names for the # symbol.
  4. A singular word connected with clear thinking or mental ability.

Spoiler: answers and explanations

Category Tiles Why they fit
Freeloader LEECH, MOOCH, PARASITE, SPONGE Each can describe someone who takes from others while contributing little or nothing.
Concealing cover BLANKET, CLOAK, CURTAIN, LAYER Each can mean a covering that hides or conceals.
Ways to refer to # HASH, NUMBER, POUND, SHARP These are names or readings associated with the # symbol.
Words for lucidity, in the singular FACULTY, MARBLE, SENSE, WIT Each is a singular word associated with clear thought or mental ability.

The categories and tiles are independently listed by TechRadar, Forbes and Parade.

The tempting red herring

SPONGE, LAYER, POUND and MARBLE can suggest a cake, but that apparent set is not one of the four accepted groups. The intended grouping places SPONGE with the freeloaders, LAYER with concealing covers, and MARBLE with the lucidity words.

How hard was it?

TechRadar described the board as “Hard” and reported its writer’s result as one mistake. That is an individual solving experience, not an official difficulty rating or a statistical measure.

Sources and date check

TechRadar and Forbes published their answer coverage on March 5, 2026, ahead of the Friday puzzle; Parade’s page is dated March 6, 2026. The official NYT Games page was not available for verification here, so the solution relies on the agreement among those three dated secondary sources. No physical edition or accessory is needed—the puzzle is an online NYT Games experience.
