Spoiler-light hints

  • Yellow: Pay packet
  • Green: Gandalf’s wardrobe
  • Blue: Ship shape
  • Purple: Third letter

Category names

Spoilers below: The following section names all four categories.

  • Yellow: Take home, as income
  • Green: Parts of a wizard costume
  • Blue: Found on a ship
  • Purple: C-___

Full answers for Connections #359

Full spoilers: The four groups and their words are listed here.

  • Take home, as income: CLEAR, EARN, MAKE, NET
  • Parts of a wizard costume: BEARD, HAT, ROBE, STAFF
  • Found on a ship: BRIDGE, DECK, HATCH, KEEL
  • C-___: CLEF, SECTION, SPAN, SUITE

Why the purple group is a word-completion puzzle

Put “C-” before each word to form C-clef, C-section, C-span, and C-suite. Unlike the literal costume and ship categories, this group depends on recognizing four familiar expressions with the same prefix.

Red herrings that can blur the groups

  • NET can suggest a fishing net, but in this puzzle it is a verb meaning to receive or make income.
  • BRIDGE can bring music to mind, but here it is a part of a ship.
  • SUITE may suggest a hotel room; paired with “C-,” it completes C-suite.

About the puzzle and archive

Connections presents 16 words to sort into four groups of four. Groups can rely on direct subject links or, as the purple set does here, a phrase-completion pattern. The official NYT Connections archive is available to All Access and Games subscribers and reaches back to June 12, 2023, covering this puzzle’s date.

NYT says Connections statistics reflect puzzles played from June 15, 2024 onward. Those statistics therefore do not provide a player-stat record for this June 4 puzzle.
