  • Yellow — Qualities of a rainy day: COLD, GRAY, WET, WINDY
  • Green — SQUARELY: DEAD, EXACTLY, RIGHT, SMACK
  • Blue — Contents of a pod: ASTRONAUT, COFFEE, PEA, WHALE
  • Purple — Body part plus a starting letter: BARM, LEAR, RANKLE, SHIP

Why the purple group works

Each word in the purple group starts with an extra letter before spelling a body part: BARM contains ARM, LEAR contains EAR, RANKLE contains ANKLE, and SHIP contains HIP. The clue is to remove the first letter, not to look for four body-part words as written.

The full 16-word board

SMACK, BARM, PEA, WET, RANKLE, ASTRONAUT, GRAY, WHALE, COLD, COFFEE, RIGHT, SHIP, EXACTLY, WINDY, LEAR, DEAD.
