For the New York Times Connections puzzle numbered #758, released July 8, 2025, the four spoiler-light hints are: another word for something a cheater has; the gym; how to get in; and a name that is common among males. The answers are below, grouped by category.

Hints for Connections #758

  • Another word for something a cheater has.
  • The gym.
  • How to get in.
  • A name that is common among males.

These clues follow the wording published by Parade; TechRadar used parallel clues: “On the side,” “Where athletes go after a game,” “Open up,” and “Share the same name.”

Answers and word groups

Spoilers: the category names and all 16 words are shown below.

Yellow: Liaison

AFFAIR, FLING, RELATIONS, THING

Green: Seen in a locker room

BENCH, LOCKER, MIRROR, SCALE

Blue: Something entered for access

CODE, KEY, PASSWORD, PIN

Purple: Johns

CANDY, CARPENTER, LEGEND, MAJOR

Why the “Johns” group is tricky

The purple group is the most deceptive by its construction: Candy, Carpenter, Legend, and Major are all names that can precede “John.” The other groups rely on more direct semantic or phrase relationships. This is an interpretation of the wordplay, not a published difficulty rating; the cited guides do not report a solve-rate or other difficulty statistic for #758.

How Connections works

The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.” Each puzzle presents 16 words, which players sort into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple, from easiest to trickiest; possible category overlap is part of the challenge, but each puzzle has one solution. Read the New York Times Help Center rules for the official explanation.

Connections is available at NYTimes.com/games/connections, in the Games app, on NYTimes.com/theathletic, and in the News app. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone.

Why the date and puzzle number matter

This is puzzle #758 from July 8, 2025. The number identifies the puzzle as well as the date: a later July 8 edition in another year would be a different puzzle.
